FEMA's vaunted "lean forward" strategy that called for advanced staging of supplies for emergency distribution failed to live up to its billing in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
In fact, the agency appears to have been completely unprepared to distribute bottled water to Hurricane Sandy victims when the storm hit this Monday. In contrast to its stated policy, FEMA failed to have any meaningful supplies of bottled water -- or any other supplies, for that matter -- stored in nearby facilities as it had proclaimed it would on its website. This was the case despite several days advance warning of the impending storm.

Those union truck drivers don’t want to work during the weekend!
I'll ask you what I asked another FReeper.
Are you presuming that this is CLEAN water???
You do realize, don't you, that there's more to making water potable than simply boiling it?
Did you account for the salt, sand, mud, debris, oil, diesel, gasoline, dead bodies, and sewage?
And with what are they to boil it? Gasoline they can't get? Or natural gas that's been turned off? Or electricity that is off due to downed power lines?
Stores of bottles water in one's home is CRITICAL to survival for just these reasons.
Let them....
Then they'll die off. It's a win/win situation.
I spent a month on a NOLS course in Wyoming. Of course, in the Winds, as the instructors told us, there are two seasons - winter and the 4th of July. And that year, it snowed on the 4th of July. But yeah, wilderness living is hard. Especially back then, when NOLS had you pack out the last four days without food (something they no longer do). But it was a good lesson - for short-term survival of a few days, food is not critical.
Hang on to this post and get back to us when it finally really starts settling in.
I believe you are spot on and it’ll be nice to see you come back with an *I told you so.*
Disease is now inevitable...but what about the rats? We are not hearing about the famous NY sewer rats. The storm should have flushed out a lot of rodents.
Ah, common sense speaks! Thanks for showing up, metmom. Some can’t think outside of their comfy box.
I sent it to my brother earlier as I thought it was a good post, also. Thanks PA Engineer.
AMEN metmom! Boil it at least then it will be disinfected water with petroleum products, various chemicals, lead, arsenic, a variable stew of poisons.
People just don’t have a clue, but all we can do is try to educate them.
Rockaway Beach would be better. As the storm hit, fire ravished three neighborhoods:
Breezy Point
Belle Harbor
Rockaway Park
Because of chest high water FDNY was unable to respond.
"I like mine with a twist."
The chairforce has benefits.
I was doing the mountain man thing for my own edification. 3 months in a tent, building the 8x12 shack, and then about a year living there without running water, commercial 'lektrikity, etc... I did make a run to town (an hour each way) every month or 2 for salt, coffee, tobacco, etc...
It wound up with me being carried off the mountain in a blizzard after a slip/fall accident (airlift was out because of the weather) and then 2 weeks in ICU after an airlift from the local (1 hour away) hospital to ABQ.
It was enlightening in many, many ways. I didn't leave my heart in New Mexico, but I darn sure left a spleen and kidney.

Sandys lesson is right before your eyes just as it was with Katrina; You either prepare and stand on your own or you can depend on a bunch of self-serving politicos, third class bureaucratic and chance to provide your basic needs.
Me I dont want to be beholden to anyone for providing what is needed for me and mine. I certainly dont want to have to kiss some gubberment third class bureaucratic to try and coax some help from them, I dont want some jack booted thug herding me in line and telling me where to stand, sit, eat or sleep. And last but not least I dont want to be shut up in with a bunch of zombies and have to worry about not only trying to get basic necessities but having to fight to keep what I manage to get.
Its your choice you can prep or you can stand around on a bridge waiting for FEMA to bring you a bottle of water, a MRE, a warm blanket and a kiss for your boo-boo. Maybe while you stand there you will get a chance to a prop in some politicos photo op and even get your picture on the national news.
For those who are just starting or are old hands at prepping you may find my Preparedness Manual helpful. You can download it at:

NOTE! THIS IS A FREE DOWNLOAD. I DO NOT MAKE ONE CENT OFF MY PREPAREDNESS MANUAL!
And by the way there’s a whole section on WATER!
For those of you who havent started already its time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, gas cans, cooking stove/fuel, tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.
As the LDS say When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.
Or as the bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.

There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.
Underestimation can be fatal.
Make sure it’s fresh bleach <= 6 mths old or so.
“The first case of Cholera will be reported before the election.”
Incubation time is 1-5 days. You might be proven right.
Can you imagine how much worse this situation would be had Sandy been a Cat 2 or bigger storm?
Not unless they get paid double time and a half...
Maybe Beck could even call them to play Moron Trivia!
Just sayin' ;)
The 2013 primary will be “Springtime for Christie”. Can Tom Kean Jr. be recruited again? Or Kyrillos if he can’t unseat Bob the Hooker Outsourcer.
PETA is probably holding a Save the Rats telethon, they’ll take care of them.
