Residents of Manhattan's 19-building, 1,191-apartment Jacob Riis projects, have been without power and water since late Monday evening, and there's been no sign of help from local government.
In all, city officials estimate some 49,000 public housing residents have been stranded by the storm, left without the resources to escape or find alternative lodging.
When Getty photographer Mario Tama ventured inside, he found residents huddled in living rooms lit by solitary candles and gas stoves running constantly for heat.
Here are a few images from Tama's visit on Thursday:
The Jacob Riis project is located on farmost edge of the East Village, between Avenue D and the Franklin D Roosevelt Drive and covering seven blocks between 6th and 13 street. Each of the 19 buildings is between six and 14 stories high.

Yes, no one could calculate what the surge was going to do.
With social media, riots can spread like wildfire. This happened throughout the ME recently.. There’s a certain demographic that looks forward to carnage in the streets. One spark can ignite an entire forest. Just sayin’..
“ABC radio news just said the city that never sleeps is now waking up...”
My daughter who lives in the lower east side and just got back there (was home with us for the first few days) called crying and very upset about conditions in the lower east side. She was very angry that the media and radio are not telling it like it is - she might try to call Hannity’s show. She is does not get upset that easily - she is absolutely outraged at the media.

“Yesterday they said most people still out wouldnt have power until the 11th.”
They’ve been high-balling it; if they tell you it will take aa week, and you’re back up in 3 days, you won’t complain. Happening in northern NJ (where much of the power was deliberately shut off, according to our governor).
Come Sunday night we will be seeing street rioting..martial law Monday
“The real surprise was the size of the surge. No one could calculate that.”
News12 NJ said that 80% of NJ would be without power, a day before the storm hit. They knew (from Irene last year) that this would be worse, since the high tide and storm surge coincided with a full moon.
No sprinklers. A mega-disaster waiting to happen.
million new York and jersey residents w/o power, gas , food & water for ten days...recipe for disaster city...
The mayor can start a new promotional ad campaign.
NYC- Enlightened 3rd world living, low calorie diets, no more carbon footprints... we rule!!
NYC is not a place for single white ladies in conditions like this.
Its a jungle even in the best of times. I look like that guy from The Shield so everyone thinks I’m a cop.
however, i can’t imagine what its like for single ladies.
Once you are over 50' on the approach, it doesn't matter.
All systems using underground wiring may be on by Saturday, but the aboveground power wires...not so fast, my friend.
I still have no power, but took a subway today- it didnt cross the East River, but right now trains are intra-boro. Buses go from Manhattan to outer boros. And it’s free today.
What a perk. /s
With about 2500/building, do you think the roofs on these buildings are big or designed enough for helo rescue?
How would anyone even know a helo was coming for them?
Maybe Moochelle is restricting their calories, like she does with school kids.
You want to see a mob of angry people - restrict the grape soda, buscuits, malt liquor, steak, and ribs from the projects.
They should use their wind and solar power. If they need to get around use mass transit or bicycle.
A sure sign from GOD that HE was NOT pleased with SNOOKI!!
