Maybe this afternoon's little trial balloon turned into a lead ballon faster than the department had anticipated. Via National Journal:
The Labor Department sought on Monday to quell worries that Hurricane Sandy, which has closed federal offices as it bears down on the East Coast, could delay the scheduled release of its monthly employment numbers on Friday. “The employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are working hard to ensure the timely release of employment data on Friday, Nov. 2,” Labor Department spokesman Carl Fillichio said in a statement. “It is our intention that Friday will be business as usual regarding the October Employment Situation report.” All federal offices in the Washington, D.C. area were closed on Monday due to the severe weather. The storm was expected to bring strong winds with gusts up to 80 miles per hour, power outages, and downed trees, as well as flooding to the D.C. metropolitan area. A concern is that the top-secret compilation of the jobs report, conducted in closed-door meetings at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is within the Labor Department, could be delayed if the economists who put it together couldn’t commute in.
I'll leave you with an important process reminder from Ed:
Just to remind everyone, the national monthly jobs reports are not collated from the states. They are compiled from two surveys conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Establishment Survey (businesses) and the Household Survey. Those have already been conducted by this time in the month, and the data is being collated and analyzed for Friday’s report. The state-level data comes out separately and later in the month.
So the heavy lifting is already done. No excuses. For what it's worth, I expect the unemployment rate to either hold steady at 7.8 percent, or tick up one or two notches. As I wrote earlier, it looks as though Team Obama is especially concerned about the latter scenario. I guess we'll see on Friday. Maybe.
Failure to release on time would be ... unexpected.
Gallup’s mid-month report had unemployment at 7.3%. They normally track about 2 tenths less than the actual BLS end-of-month release.
It is a mistake to make a big deal out of the release of the September UE3.
My guess, based on Gallup’s past experience, is that it’s coming in at about 7.5%.
IOW, making a big media splash enables the Gov’t to be saying’ “Don’t throw me in that briar patch, Brer Fox.”
Then they get a free build up that slams into the media making them look good 4 days before the election.
Better to get it over with, but also better not to paint them as reluctant and then have “good” numbers come out.
I believe the bulk of jobs growth will again be some combination of part time, discouraged workers, governmental hiring, etc.
All that information is DIGITAL.
What reason is there that the data cannot be analyzed in another location?
If they are busting their a$$es to get it out on time, to me, that can only mean that in fact, the numbers are GOOD for Obama. (These people in Government are usually liberal
worked there for many years). Or not, who knows...
How long does it take to make up Obama’s numbers anyway?
The data are mobile, the liars are local.
Translated, that means: “We have massaged the numbers to Chairman Obamao`s satisfaction. Thus, we are prepared to inform the masses of the Chairman`s great and astounding success in reducing unemployment to a negligible figure. All hail the Great Reader!!!”
DUH! Just make up a number and publish it. You are going to do that anyway. Just strip away all the bogus machinations.
There is light rain and light wind in the DC Metropolitan area today.
And, of course, because of these “conditions”, the US Government is closed in the area. Can’t inconvenience the Washington bureaucrats, can we?
Reporting facts and figures is easy, it is making up things that takes a little time and creativity.
Bureaucrats don’t “work hard.” They merely postpone vacations.
House cleaners work hard. Not bureaucrats.
Uh, correct me if I'm worng here, but I could swear I remember learning that there is a 3-month lag in the data collected for most economic statistics provided by federal gubmint propoganda agencies; as a result, why would there be a delay in releasing these numbers? You don't suppose they could be delaying the release because they are detrimental to the ignorant no talent a$$ clown do you? /s
Department of Labor staff busily working on job report.
We are ‘working very hard’ but it may take another Labor Board or another election to get the jobs report. /s
Now where have I heard that excuse before.
There, true title restored.
In truth, the overwhelming majority of Americans no longer believe ANYTHING Obozo, the MSM and his so-called "administration" report or say about ANYTHING because they LIE and OBFUSCATE about EVERYTHING!
I would not be surprised if this is going to be the report
