Having said that, both New York state and New Jersey could postpone their respective elections, without really impacting the presidential contest.

I dunno. I expect NY to go to obama because of the NYC vote. If he doesn't have that to count on, NY could actually be up for grabs.

" As for fuel, though, one would surely hope the Nat'l Guard would have some gravity feed or manual pump type fuel tanks."

Hope they already have electric generators running those pumps because gravity feed or hand cranked pumps take much longer to unload that fuel.
Now multiply that with thousands of people waiting in line for fuel just for generators.... it's going to be a mad house for sure.

One of the ways some people deal with potential bad news is denial. Its an effective tool to shield oneself. It doesn’t mean the person doesn’t care, it means the person cares more than they can handle.

"Some people". This one's been making the case that the entire thing has been overblown and over hyped for days now.

Denial? I don't think so.

Heartless? I think absolutely so.

“It’s a huge public hospital, with an iconic psychiatric ward. Although some may say “How can you tell?”

I did my Psychiatry in another HHC hospital. You can tell.

Exactly. “Connections” should be required viewing in every school.

I live in northern CT. Our local weather forecasts made it seem like the issues in NJ and NY along the shore would be more prevalent inland. As far as I can tell from the scanner, mostly tree damage to utilities. No reports of flooding inland or major structural damage etc.

When I saw it was supposed to hit in the southern part of NJ, and the wind direction, I figured the biggest threat would be flooding along the shoreline.

We appreciate it. I have a lot of family in Texas and I know you all are mostly kind-hearted folk.

You're right, Betis. Most Texans are nothing, if not big hearted and giving. Our state already has teams on the way to help.

Not counting the price of gasoline, home fuel oil and diesel will go up.... this is not going to help Obama.

Are the waters up north warm enough for a Cat 2, 3 or 4?

Not really. The water temp has to be 80 minimum.

That's a major reason that the hurricanes die out as they head north.

The other reason is that going up along the coast cuts off a huge chunk of their fuel, warm water. They can't keep going when there's land nearby. Nothing to fuel them.

as a former upstater, I agree totally with you...NYS is a lot like California....lots of farmland...lots of forests...lots of lakes...lots of orchards....plenty of people that consider themselves “country” .....but even with that, the NY cityers are not bad either..... but like Seattle in my state of Washington, NY dominates the state and its politics...

3.5 million without power across eleven states.

Wow... I'm sure my house is one of those. Hope we're back up by election day.

I made a mistake earlier... We're actually in West Palm Beach, not Palm Beach. (Took me awhile to figure out where I was, lol)

I admit I'm not very familiar with the eastern side of Florida.

That's IF ? they can get those trucks up the streets.

Right now some of those streets are flooded and first responders will be the first to access to those places.

Well, you nailed the landfall almost dead on...report I saw said the “official” landfall was 5 miles south of Atlantic City, minimum central pressure 946 mb.

News reports today showed utility crews here organizing to go to the NE if needed. Looks like the if has been erased. :-(

No kidding. We're probably looking at months, if not years, to get the city back in perfect working condition. I fully expect to see a large exodus out of New York City because of this disaster.

I’m going to speak the unspeakable...
REMEMBER NEW ORLEANS?

The Democrat Voters are going to start feeding on each other just after first light. There is likely no more than one or two days supply of Meth/Crack on hand in the city, and no power for the Credit Card Machines to buy anything with EBT’s...

I apologize for thinking it, but the first thing that popped into my head after I saw your post was....

‘You don’t suppose we’ll get a 2012 version of “Looter Guy”, do you?’

Another potential problem they face is the concrete foundations of those buildings being compromised. There will be mounds of soil erosion underneath New York city in those subways and sewage lines.

Do remember that the primary reason New York City is full of skyscrapers, is because Manhattan sits upon a base of solid granite. Most of the multi-story buildings in that city have their foundations anchored to it.

Your concerns are otherwise well justified. I don't think anyone can properly calculate the enormous toll of damage now occurring to the city infrastructure. There's probably no easy way to even overstate it, at this point.
