A month ago, there would have been overwhelming Democratic support for this. Today? Not so much.
Swing states would retain their importance in the Electoral College, but the additional 29 delegates awarded to the popular-vote winner would fundamentally alter the focus of the campaigns. Candidates would have to target voters in states they have no chance of winning, as well as in states they have no chance of losing
Most analysts believe the 2012 election will be decided by fewer than 29 Electoral College votes.
The timing of the resolution from Israel, the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, is curious since there is increasing speculation that for the fifth time in history, the 2012 presidential election could result in a split between the popular vote and Electoral College decision. And in this case, most of the speculation has been that President Obama might win the Electoral College while losing the popular vote.

There is no popular vote. We vote, by states, for the president through our electors.
Sorry if that doesn’t give the Democrat-Fraud-Vote printers in Chicago/Philadelphia/New York enough power. There are lots of corrupt places around the world ready to accommodate anyone that wants corruption.
If it works don’t fix it......
Yeah. 57. (We got “57 states,” just like the international islamicist conference). 57 it is !
Its a solution in search of a problem.
You can abolish the electoral college and have the President elected by direct popular vote.
No faithless elector and zero chance any one other the popular vote winner gets elected.
There is nothing wrong with the electoral college that needs to be fixed. If we need to change, get rid of it rather than try to mend it.
That is both logical and honest.
How about we give people who own real property tax assessed in excess of $250,000 2 votes and people possessed of property in excess of $500,000 3 votes ?
how bout if we declare this democracy business a miserable failure and stop trying to impose it on the 3rd world underdeveloped countries ...
Dang. You keep talking like that and I will have to wake the wife.
I agree. There is no popular vote, it’s just mental masturbation from the media.
"But that disenfranchises people who have negative tax!" This is bad why?
In Greece, whichever party wins the popular vote receives fifty extra seats in congress...
How about we follow the Constitution when electing a President, and then we continue to follow the Constitution when the President acts as Commander-in-Chief and as head of the Executive Branch of our federal government?
While we are doing the “how about” - how about if we give those who live off the dole and have NEVER worked even though able-bodied, absolutely NO votes. Those on Social Security, Retirement, etc., are NOT receiving “entitlements” as the Dems like to call it in an attempt to put them in a category with the parasites who have never worked and should, thus, be allowed to vote. Those who are genuinely disabled should vote. However, those who clearly have made a life of living as a parasite should not be allowed to vote since they contribute nothing to support the government.
Greece...hmmmmm....enough said.
Were it not for the Electoral College, approximately 10 counties, burroughs, etc. would decide each election.
The Electoral College protects the regional interests of the entire country, not just the whims of a huge population congregrated together (crammed) in a few special areas of the country. It protects the interests of the States, and it assures that a mob attitude won’t dominate the outcome.
It one wants a popular vote, he should stick to “American Idol” on TV.
When I see a Democrat make such a suggestion, I completely picture the worst of the worst used car dealers selling a car with a hidden history and getting a gullible buyer to finance on location.
