President Obama earns just over 50% of the vote in Minnesota.
A new telephone survey of Likely Minnesota Voters finds Barack Obama with 51% support to 46% for Mitt Romney. One percent (1%) prefers some other candidate, while another one percent (1%) is undecided.

Plus, Minneapolis is a very progressive city - which is good in some respects and horrible in its taxes, cost structure, and support of every goofy "special class" known to man.
'Cause they were in the shower?
[I had to fit another FR meme in there]
And a generous portion of white guilt. Especially in the working class suburbs, the DFL'ers are happy to give tax money to welfare recipients, so they will STAY where they are, and not bother anyone.
Note that I used DFL, instead of Democrat. In MN, that's what the Democrats call themselves. It's the name of a coalition that I think Hubert Humphrey formed long ago, from Democrats, Farmers, and Labor. And that gives you a clue: farmers are usually conservative small businessmen elsewhere in the country, but in MN, they are allied with the Democrats. It's not as monolithic as it once was, but that gives you an idea of where their power came from.
Even in 1984, when native-son Mondale was the candidate, MN only went for Mondale by a few thousand votes -- less than 1 vote per precinct. The top 5 or 6 third-party candidates each got more votes than Mondale's margin of victory.
You must not be Scandinavian.
Exactly. It also means not talking about anything meaningful but just superficial BS. I’m always amazed at the discomfort of Minnesotans when a real conversation erupts.
There is also a constitutional amendment on the ballot in Minnesota seeking to define marriage as between one man and one woman, which has the gay community motivated to vote to turn down that amendment.
I don’t know how that factors in, and it may change the normal assumptions if the supporters of the amendment like me are motivated to come out. However, everyone is about as motivated as they can be trying to rid ourselves of Obama, so I think the amendment only helps the libs to be more motivated to come out.
The libs in this state are the most irrational people I have ever met. Immediate anger, and demanding that when it comes to gay marriage, only individual rights count, but in everything else, the rules of the hive queen dominate all.
First post....
People are slowly wising up about the MN Democratic-Farmer Labor party. I did in 1979 and have been conservative like JFK & Reagan since. When your parents run you from diapers to death like they do in this state, kids tend to stay close to the family tree. If you freed yourself from those bonds at a young enough age, you’ll find more open minded voters. Independent minded Minnesotans don’t take kindly to being fooled more than once. Carter me once, shame on you. Please don’t label the state unless your purpose is to turn off the very people you covet. Minnesota continues to be a great place to live. Never mind Stuart Smalley.

“Does anyone know why MN is so liberal?”
Since statehood, Minnesota has had a tradition of radicalism among blue collar and labor groups. One of the founders of the Grange was from Minnesota. Back in the early part of the 20th Century, the Non-Partisan League had a strong following here. In the urban areas of Minneapolis/St Paul as well as the Iron Range, the unions were always well organized.
It didn’t help that a sizable group of immigrants came to Minnesota from Scandinavia either. They brought with them their social welfare views and those views continued to be passed on from generation to generation.
>>Does anyone know why MN is so liberal? It just doesnt seem right in that part of the country.
Just my opinion: I think Minnesotans are actually conservative, but don’t know it. At least that was my observation in the 70s and 80s.
Ever hear the expression “Minnesota nice?”
Back then, before the state was flooded with foreigners who came for easy welfare, the typical Minnesotan was very hardworking and careful with money. At the same time, he (or she) was very compassionate and would give you the shirt off his back. I think the reasoning was something like this - If I were laid off, I would knock myself out looking for a new job, but in the meantime I would not want to lose my home, so benefits for the unemployed should be generous. This attitude worked fine, so long as everyone shared it.
Then somewhere about the 80s, the state started getting a big influx of various ethnic groups, many of whom spent most of their time unemployed or on welfare. This included Mexicans, American blacks from other parts of the country, a large population of Somalis, and a large population of Hmong. There may be more, but those are the ones I am aware of.
Many of the Mexicans came for seasonal work and stayed when they realized that they could get free handouts. Many of the blacks came because they found out that the welfare laws were more generous than in the state they were living in. Most of the Somalis and Hmong were brought in by church groups trying to rescue people from the terrible conditions in their home country.
As more and more of them moved into the state, they voted more and more leftwing in order to keep the freebies coming.
good analysis I think.
That doesn’t explain the DFL and its hold on the state for the last 60+ years nor governors like Wendell and Arnie nor Hubert Humphrey, planned communities or Wellstone. It’s much more deep than Somalis moving into town. It’s part of what Minnesota is....a very very liberal state.
