A U.S. Navy Aegis cruiser collided with a nuclear-powered submarine during exercises off the East Cost on Saturday, collapsing the sonar dome on the cruiser and possibly causing other damage, but no injuries, U.S. Navy officials said.
The collision between the USS San Jacinto and the nuclear-powered submarine USS Montpelier occurred about 3:30 p.m., the Navy said in a statement. The Navy declined to say where off the East Coast the accident occurred.
A Navy official said the watch team aboard the San Jacinto saw a periscope rise from the water about 100 to 200 yards (meters) ahead of the vessel during the exercise. The cruiser ordered "all back," but the San Jacinto still collided with the submarine.
The collision caused the collapse of the cruiser's sonar dome, a bulbous-shaped device on the bow of the ship beneath the water line, the Navy official said on condition of anonymity.
The rubber dome houses some of the vessel's electronic navigation, detection and ranging equipment.
The Navy said no personnel were injured during the incident and there was no damage to the submarine's nuclear-powered propulsion plant. Both vessels were operating under their own power.

Biden: "I didn' know nuthin' about this!"
Dang. Well it does seem to be the in thing now as a Naval Officer to get relieved.
Ubama’s affirmative-action homo commanders go bump.
It will be interesting to see what happens next.
0bama will probably promote all involved.
I wonder what went through the sub Captian’s mind as he looked through the periscope.
(Where are those guys???,..WHOA!!!)
I remember seeing a picture of a German U-boat that got chewed
up from a propeller from the Schornhorst when the sub got too close
and got pulled into that monsters blades
The sub survived but looked like would need a year to repair
Things military can be dangerous and often are
Put down your meds and step slowly away from the keyboard...
I remember a fishing boat going straight down. Its netting had to get caught into a submarine. Question: Was it U.S. or Russian? The leftists blamed guess whom?
The San JacK is a great ship with a great crew and I never worried about my carrier( The George Washington) having any trouble, when the San Jack was around.
You seriously think US navy vessels never collided with each other before this administration?
That was back in the early 80’s wasn’t it
America’s fault of course/Sarc
This is what gun pockets and marble sized steel bearings are for.
Who ate my strawberries?
“..oops- someone is going to be relieved of command..”
Both, probably.
Navigation by Braille is rarely considered career-enhancing.

The White House acted as quickly as possible to diffuse the situation by denouncing the Bill of Rights, genuflecting several times in the direction of the one of the oceans, and by issuing this heartfelt apology: "The Future does not belong to those who mock the imaginary friends of Flipper and Aquaman."]
Tragically, it came up under a Japanese fishing vessel, sunk it, and killed most of their seamen.
Even worse, the sub had Republican VIP civilians on board, and the captain was putting on a show for his guests.
Around this same time, another sub slammed head on into a sea mount in the central Pacific.
Miraculously, the sub didn't rupture, but a seaman in the torpedo room died from a head injury, and several other seamen were seriously injured.
Did I say that?
Collisions in previous administrations likely didn't involve homo commanders. Now, it's a distinct possibility.
That is what used to happen, but a female commander had a collision and she didn’t loose her command. Happened about 8 months after Obama got elected.
She was the first female commander of a combat ship. Looks like the PC Crowd interceded.
Lets see what happens now that they have given others a pass.
