fter weeks of refraining from dipping back into the sensitive topic of the attack that killed the American ambassador in Libya, Mitt Romney on Monday offered harsh criticism of the administration for being slow to label the assault terrorism and faulted its overall handling of the attack.
The assault on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi cannot be blamed on a reprehensible video insulting Islam, despite the administrations attempts to convince us of that for so long, Mr. Romney said. No, as the administration has finally conceded, these attacks were the deliberate work of terrorists who use violence to impose their dark ideology on others.
In a wide-ranging foreign policy address meant to polish Mr. Romneys image as a potential commander in chief, he belittled President Obama as leading from behind in conflict spots across the Middle East, from Syria to Iran to Egypt to Israel.
Acknowledging that Mr. Obama deserves credit for killing Osama bin Laden, he nonetheless criticized the president as lacking a comprehensive counterterrorism policy and failing to capitalize on the Arab Spring uprisings.
Unfortunately, so many of these people who could be our friends feel that our president is indifferent to their quest for freedom and dignity, he said, speaking at the Virginia Military Institute. As one Syrian woman put it, We will not forget that you forgot about us.
On Iran, Mr. Romney said that the presidents sanctions had failed to slow its march to a nuclear weapon. He would put the leaders of Iran on notice that the United States, along with friends and allies, would halt that progress, beginning with a show of military force.
I will restore the permanent presence of aircraft carrier task forces in both the eastern Mediterranean and the Gulf, Mr. Romney said.

The truth will set us free -— hopefully.
Renewed respect for Mitt Romney and the way he is campaigning. it’s hard to top class and competitiveness.
Preposterous. The Messiah of Marvel, the One, the Obama is ever vigilent, Omnipotent, both from anticipation, detection, prevention, and yes, even in the aftermath, majestically comprehensive and complete.
You don’t need to look behind that curtain over there where his State Department screwed the pooch big time on Bengazi, nor do you need to consider the double/triple/quadruple talk in laying blame afterwards...that was just trouble on the ‘talking points hotline conference call’....they gots that together now....
Oh! and you don’t need to think any more about that nasty little detail that CNN found the AMBASSADOR’s journal in an unguarded crime scene FOUR EFFING DAYS after the incident...
Nope, no incompetence here....it’s just deliberate as hell...
If the media was even close to objective the headline wouldn’t have the “Romney says” part.
They will never be our friends. Democrat or Republican, the self delusion will continue.
Botched response?? The real problem is that the Administration botched the response to the Ambassador’s security requests. The lack of security lead directly to the murders and illustrate the incompetence of Hillary, the State Department and Napolitano.
The White Hut is going to spend the rest of the day and week doubling down on Romney for daring to call out Hussein on another major failure.
Dissent is patriotic, remember, Hussein Heads?
Used to be, a plea for help was just that, especially from an ambassador.. reckun we’re in a whole new era.. the clinton ‘soft-power’ one,, nothing to see here folk, just socialists waging peace..
Ambassador Stevens was hung out to dry....Planned attack..We will never know publicly the real truth...
Exactly. Zero security. Zero planning for 9/11. Zero response to a consulate burned and ambassador murdered.
Actually I am still miffed about the eqypt incident which was quickly forgotten after the libya fiasco. I have not forgotten. Tie them together - obama botched eqypt and libya and we have the video to prove it.
Has been so since the day he rode in on a unicorn.
Yes, were he not sitting astride that Unicorn, Majestic Moonbeams would have shown from without his ass.....
“Romney’s speech was the best I heard from a politician for years.”
I agree. I think Bozo’s pal, Vladimir, might be getting a little edgy right about now.
If the shoe were on the other foot the Times headline would read:
Yes, the excuses were botched. The attack went according to plan.
I would like to know who cut his security detail. It sounds like an insider was working with the muslim brotherhood to assinate the ambassidor.
