FREEDOM ISNT FREE!
It Is Purchased With The Blood Of Patriots!
Freedom Isnt Free
By Cdr. Kelly Strong USCG (ret)
I watched the flag pass by one day, It fluttered in the breeze. A young Marine saluted it, And then he stood at ease. I looked at him in uniform So young, so tall, so proud, With hair cut square and eyes alert Hed stand out in any crowd.
Eternal Father, Strong to Save (Click)
I thought how many men like him Had fallen through the years. How many died on foreign soil How many mothers tears? How many pilots planes shot down? How many died at sea How many foxholes were soldiers graves? No, freedom isnt free.
Taps (Click)
I heard the sound of Taps one night, When everything was still, I listened to the bugler play And felt a sudden chill. I wondered just how many times That Taps had meant Amen, When a flag had covered a coffin. Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children, Of the mothers and the wives, Of fathers, sons and husbands With interrupted lives, I thought about a graveyard At the bottom of the sea Of unmarked graves in Arlington, No, freedom isnt free.
God Of Our Fathers (Click)

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

It had been a few years since
Sergei Rachmaninov had written a collection of solo piano pieces, and he was confident enough of his craft to go up against the great Chopin, who had defined the prelude for piano. Sergeis Opus 23 collection is a must for any budding pianist.
This is the great Richter playing the first prelude, a wonderfully dark and contemplative piece.
Rachmaninov: Prelude in F# minor, Op. 23/1
This is one of the greatest piano showpieces ever written, and Ashkenazy does it justice.
Prelude in B-flat, Op. 23/2
Ashkenazy gives this one a mysterious flavor. Follow along with the score. You wont be able to get the tune out of your head.
Prelude in D minor, Op. 23/3
This is Van Cliburn of Texas, one of very best American interpreters of Rachmaninov. Listen to the multilevel voices Sergei adds to the text by using held notes, which Cliburn brings out beautifully. This is a one handkerchief piece.
Prelude in D, Op. 23/4
I tackled this piece at age 11, and most budding pianists get this as their first taste of Sergei. Its not that tough technically, but the challenge is clarity of articulation. I love the way Lisitsa brings out the interior voices in the middle section.
Prelude in G minor, Op. 23/5
Follow the score along with Ashkenazy. Its very dreamy.
Prelude in E-flat, Op. 23/6
Weird and otherworldly. Weissenberg at the keyboard.
Prelude in C minor, Op. 23/7
Follow the score with Ashkenazy.
Prelude in A-flat, Op. 23/8
This is Ashkenazy in another strange piece.
Prelude in E-flat minor, Op. 23/9
Kissin takes this piece a bit faster than others, but it works just fine.
Prelude in G-flat, Op. 23/10

Its one thing to work freelance, but when you have a wife and child, its best to find a good paying job.
Sergei Rachmaninov found himself a gig as music director of the Bolshoi Theater in 1904 at age 31. He could spend his time conducting the scores of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov and Anton Rubinstein, but it would help if he could write something for the theater. Over the next two years, Sergei wrote four one-act operas, two of which he trusted enough to assign opus numbers.
Finding videos of Russian opera is difficult. Luckily I found all five segments of one opera with subtitles, and the staging is imaginative. The first thing you will notice is that Sergei knows exactly how to write for voice and orchestra. There is neither doubt nor hesitation.
The problem with staging it today is political correctness. Rachmaninov decided to set Pushkins story pretty much as is. This is a very dark opera, the dominant theme is money, and one villain is a Jewish moneylender. Antisemitism was rampant in tsarist Russia, and Sergei was not to blame for the storyline. Money was to become a major theme of Sergeis life after he came to America. He was one of the few composers who understood both the artistic side and the business side of his craft. Here it makes its first appearance.
Rachmaninov: The Miserly Knight, Op. 24, 1 of 5

(3 of 5)
The vault belonging to the father of the miserly knight reminds me of Jack Bennys vault. I was waiting for the crocodile to appear.
(4 of 5)
The duke is dressed like a Chechen gangster. The director is having fun.

I think I’m detecting a theme.
Are you posting all these great “goodbye” songs because, you know, there’s someone we want to say goodby to, real soon?
I love the Jackson Five, their hits still totally rule in my book.
Thanks for posting this one!

Welcome back, Kathy! That one always gets me - it needs to be played more as far as I'm concerned! It reflects that we didn't gain our cherished Freedoms through pacifism, appeasement or negotiation. We wrested them from the tyrant's oppressive grip through force of arms, fire, steel and blood!
I thank Our Lord daily that we still produce men and women of valor, men and women who will not shirk the fight for Freedom, men and women who will hazard all in Freedom's Fight!
