In 1908, the 35 year old Sergei Rachmaninov wrote his first sonata for solo piano. Rather than analyze this one, I suggest just letting it flow.

Rachmaninov: Piano Sonata #1 in D minor, Op. 28, first movement

(second movement)

(third movement)

When Sergei Rachmaninov passed through Leipzig, he saw a painting by Arnold Böcklin titled “The Isle of the Dead”. This picture, shown in the video, is what inspired Sergei to write his famous tone poem with its quotation of the Dies irae.

Rachmaninov: “The Isle of the Dead”, Op. 29

In 1909, Rachmaninov decided to see the wider world and make some money. Tchaikovsky had made two American tours during his lifetime, and for each tour he had written a signature piece. Sergei decided it was time for another piano concerto, something to take America by storm, which he was to do. But that’s for next week.

Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again” is the best ever——a real oldie but a real goodie.

I'm glad someone on this board remembers Vera Lynn. Believe it or not, her 1939 version of "We'll Meet Again was played over the PA system at the conclusion of UCLA Bruins football home games a few years ago.
