The presidents team officially downplayed the debate, faulted Romneys facts, and pledged to make adjustments. But some aides and alumni admitted Mitt changed the narrative last night.
People had been set in their ways, with many thinking, Obama is going to win, said William Daley, now back in Chicago after serving in the West Wing. If this is a restart and a second look for those who have been soft, then that puts pressure on [Vice President Joe] Biden in the next big show, meaning the vice-presidential debate with Rep. Paul Ryan on Oct. 11.
What seems to be a victory in optics for Romney may create an opportunity for those people to take a second look. Looking at the polling going into the debate, he needed that, said Daley, who oversaw Vice President Al Gores 2000 presidential campaign against George W. Bush.
Opinion is that he had an extremely good night, and that is a big advantage, said Daley. Thats big for a guy on the ropes, now perhaps back with solid legs in the ring. Whether that now turns into a fundamental beginning of a reshape of the campaign is unknown.
At least two current Obama campaign aides were more blunt than Daley and used the term shell-shocked over the Obama performance. There were various analyses of what went wrong, including finger-pointing at debate preparations. Those included claims that Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, who played the role of Romney in mock debates, probably wasnt tough and aggressive enough. (He does, after all, want to be Secretary of State, claimed one aide.)

If I remember correctly, Romney did his missionary job in France, didn't he? Imagine trying to talk about Mormonism to 1960s French!
The problem now is that Romney has been humanized and Obama can’t just pretend he’s a rich guy on a pedestal that is out of touch with everyone.
Why is everyone shocked by the real Obama?
>A NO SHOW.
“Because we have this war with Iran and Libya I must cancel my appearance at these debates....”
I wonder what Biden will do to HELP ROMNEY win?? Oh, I know talk!!
The perfect Romney answer to the tax return questions - I’ll some you my tax returns if you’ll release all the information you’ve been hiding, like college transcripts. Obama is way to vulnerable on so many fronts. If he attacks and deflects too much, he’s going to look defensive, peevish and whiny. He’s going to look like he’s hiding something.
I am longing to hear Romney bring up Fast and Furious, as well as Benghazi, in the foreign policy debate. This administration has blood on its hands, big time and it goes all the way to the top. I want to hear how Obama try sto defend the administrations actions on both.
I me “show” and “tries to”. Now I don’t sound like such an illiterate.
When you have a former CEO standing on the same stage in a national debate as a former community organizer, is there any doubt about who is going to get his clock cleaned?
What’s the video? I know the dems have some dirty stuff that has yet to come out, but they will look like thugs.
Daley’s getting out the long knives. The Daley family is very vindictive.
Do you think Palin would have spanked Obama as good as Romney did?Better...It would have been bloody without trying.
Will they be re-cycling the Ponytail Guy?
Which is a statement not only about Gov. Mitt Romney and Pres. Barack Obama...but about Sen. John McCain, as well.
That’s really too bad, I hope they have enough energy to update and send out their resumes.
Even though the network that created, groomed and elected Obama is Chicago-based, I sense that the Daley family is not a part of it.
The Daley family might be Democrat lifers...but they're not Communists. And, while their interests don't extend beyond Chicago, they are Americans.
That distinguishes the Daleys from the likes of William Ayers, Valerie Jarrett, David Axelrod, Bernadine Dohrn, Rashid Khalidi, et al.
Makes me wonder...if the Obama Era crashes and burns, will the Daleys take steps to crush the city's Commie network?
Romney’s boot on his throat...yup..0’s got him right where he wants him.
Yeah Dems, your brilliant genius wasn’t shining very brightly last night, was he? What could have gone wrong?.......hmmmm...could it be your Fearless Leader isn’t that bright after all? Maybe gullible leftists like yourselves got sucked in thinking because he has a good crease in his pants, nobody could measure up to him. Wrong. Your brilliant genius is just a run-of-the-mill, leftist academic with no knowledge of how the real world works.
Gallup? The ones Hussein threatened to sue, but apparently dropped it when the Gallup polls “got in line”?
Denfinitely agree with #1. Hussein is going to confuse aggression and hostility with strength. But if we can foresee that possibility, I would hope that Romney’s debate team can.
I didn’t know that. I imagine the French were quite bemused.
