TV anchor Jennifer Livingston blasts viewer who attacked her weight

A local news anchor took the air Tuesday to blast a viewer who attacked her for being overweight.

Jennifer Livingston of WKBT in La Crosse, Wis., slammed the viewer on-air after he wrote in to complain that Livingston wasn't "a suitable example for this community's young people, girls in particular" because of her size.

"I was surprised indeed to witness that your physical condition hasn't improved for many years," the viewer wrote in the email titled "Community Responsibility."

"I leave you this note hoping that you'll reconsider your responsibility as a local public personality to present and promote a healthy lifestyle."

The letter quickly went viral after her husband, fellow WKBT anchor Mike Thompson posted it to his Facebook page Friday, telling followers that it made him "sick to his stomach."

She may be overweight, but she looks OK to me.

Look around. Fat is the “new normal”.

She's well beyond "a little overweight".

It's more amazing that libs who can't control what they stuff into their own body cavities think they can control everyone else's behavior.

If its real it might have been edited.

Remember it was her husband who decided to make it public, so who knows.

She claims it is a glandular problem; I feel that obviously she is not taking proper thyroid medicine which can control her condition. I have no thyroids or pituitary glands due to tumors. I take thyroid replacement meds and have lost a TON of weight, combined with an exercise schedule. That is why I have a person thing about Ms. Livingston...even with glandular conditions, she can still lose weight and be healthy.

How do we know that this lady doesn’t have a glandular disorder and can’t lose weight! By who’s standards is she classified as fat? If you think the AMA they also claim a low fat diet is needed to lose weight. False. Carbs are the reason for weight gain.

Call me weird, but I prefer women who don’t have the body of a fourteen year old. She looks just fine, I think. I don’t think she’s bad enough to warrant ridicule for her weight.

every single obese person claims it is a “thyroid problem”.

It diminishes those with real thyroid issues.

It is never mentioned that being fat CAUSES thyroid CAUSES diabetes CAUSES high blood pressure.

This is like cartman saying he is just big boned.

a suitable example for this community's young people, girls in particular

We now have multiple generations who believe this sort of sentiment justifies a mob mentality. Even worse, many of them are not aware they have been brainwashed with the buzzwords: community, examples, standards, etc.

Apart from the sheer rudeness of commenting on anyone's personal appearance, it is disturbing that so many feel it their privilege, even their duty, to act as unpaid mmbers of the Thought Police.

I remember seeing some of them with those nasty, unhealthy cigarettes! Oh yeah, let's beat up on the smokers next, ok? Then we'll go after the drinkers...some of the comments on this thread are disgusting. Sounds like Michelle was here.

I agree with you in that I think she looks beautiful. What I find disgusting are these “hollywood” types that are bone skinny, but have plastic surgery expanded upper lips, fake cheek bones and forever open eyes, not to mention the fake, overly sized boobs.

Jennifer is naturally beautiful and doesn’t need that plastic stuff.

I do think that the letter writer is a snob who thinks his opinion on everything needs to brought to everyone’s attention, but I also agree that one idiots letter doesn’t really equate bullying in my book.

All in all though, I agree with Mrs. Livingstons response.

She is, however in the public eye and makes good money; thus she has to take the good and the bad and the ugly regarding comments. It is like comedians and hecklers. If a comedian gets hurt by hecklers yelling “you suck!” then get out of comedy. Be a comedy writer then.

Most 14 year olds do have more “womenly” bodies than those teenagers of the past 20 years. People attribute the fact women are developing at early ages to hormones in milk and environmental factors.

Good money? What does she earn, exactly, and how do you know?

I’m not saying she is exempt from the usual criticism, even mindless hatred from nutters.

The problem, once again, is with the letter writer’s motivation and obvious total belief in the ‘role model’ nonsense that is used to cow anyone treading outside PC standards. In addition, those standards are wildly inconsistent. Pop stars, models and even porn actresses are cited as ‘strong, independent women,’ apparently as long as they don’t carry a few extra pounds. Look at all the teeth-gnashing about ‘plus sized models’ aka women who don’t look like prepubescent boys.

There is a reason I watch Fox News for Megan Kelly and not MSNBC and Rachel Madcow. I am a dude, and I like my women anchorwomen thin and attractive. Shoot me!

These people are not real journalists. If they are fat or ugly, they will get few viewers. Same as with movie and TV stars. When I am getting ready for work in the morning, I watch Houston's local channel 2 because they have the cutest traffic girl. The only other thing that factors in is the amount of in-my-face bias I see. Otherwise, they are all pretty much the same quality-wise.

‘very unfair to their spouse if they were thin before marriage and got fat afterwards..would be serious grounds for divorce in my book.’

My advice to you: please don’t get married or procreate until you change this attitude.

For the record, I weigh 110 pounds and am about 5 foot 4 inches tall—and although I turn 40 in about 4 more months, I get carded for buying alcohol and mistaken for my husband’s teenage daughter. That’s after four kids and 18 years of marriage. I don’t work out but have a high metabolism (I love to eat and I am a salt addict with a BP of 90/50, even when pregnant).

The thing is, when I hear—or read—comments like yours, it scares me because I have two beautiful daughters, ages 14 and 8. Your comment tells me that a guy won’t give them the time of day (when they are dating age) if they don’t look like supermodels or work out every day. Neither one of them is overweight, and as much of a struggle it is to get kids to eat right, they do a pretty good job of eating their fruits and veggies. They get out and play outside a lot, since we live in a rural area with lots of neighbor kids.

My husband definitely doesn’t weigh what he did when we got married. I believe some of it in his case is genetic. He spent almost a decade driving boats for the Navy SEALS and it beat the hell out of his joints, his back, and his knees. Since his discharge, he has put on a good amount of weight, and he struggles with it. But just to be clear, my husband is not a lazy man. He has never been unemployed since he was a teenager. Sometimes he has worked 2 or more jobs. After his Navy service, he worked a full-time job and went to engineering school, pulling down close to a 4.0 GPA. That was with a wife, three kids, and a house and land to take care of. Today, we live on two acres and in an older house that requires some upkeep—we had a large garden this year. He keeps up with his job, the house and yardwork, his duties as a Cub Scout leader, activity in our parish, helping the kids with homework and spending time with them, and being a fantastic husband. He also had to spend a lot of time the last few months helping care for his parents’ home after his dad had open-heart surgery in July (and they live 4.5 hours away).

He is not sitting in his recliner full-time drinking beer and watching sports. So yes, he’s gained weight, but he is aware of that fact. He’s still a good husband, father, and person. I’m not divorcing him just because of his weight. I don’t recall ‘till death do us part unless you put on some pounds.’ (BTW, he is a FReeper if you want to tell him how you feel about ‘chubby’ people.)

I’ll give you a hint, since it’s obvious you’ve never been married. Looks fade—I’ve got some grey hairs I didn’t have when we got married in 1995. I have stretch marks from bringing four human beings into the world. However, I would hope that I am a better person than I was 18 years ago, even if my looks aren’t the same. My husband may not be 190 lbs anymore (he’s 6’3”), but he still makes me laugh like no else does, he treats me like a man should treat a woman, and he’s put up with a lot of my ‘stuff’ in the last 18 years.

I am in no way, shape, or form condoning obesity or not eating properly, although I am not a food snob or a food Nazi. I am simply saying that divorcing someone simply for gaining weight says a hell of a lot more about you than it does for the person you would divorce.

Besides, what you may think is desirable in a female is not what another man might find attractive. I’ve also noticed that I’ve met some sickly thin people and some incredibly healthy heavier people. My great-grandparents, dairy farmers in Wisconsin, ate high fat diets with lots of heavy cream, butter, and the like and lived to be in their 80s and 90s.

I have the same amount of concern about whether a TV newswoman is packing a few extra pounds as I do about:

whether the tow truck driver who comes to hook up my stalled car is a smoker

whether the kid packing my groceries at the store has a dorky looking mullet

whether the UPS driver who just brought my new monitor from Newegg has a tattoo.
