Campbell Soup is closing two U.S. plants and cutting more than 700 jobs as it looks to trim costs amid declining consumption of its canned soups.
The world's largest soup maker said Thursday that it will close its plant in Sacramento that has about 700 full-time workers. The plant, which makes soups, sauces and beverages, was built in 1947 and is the company's oldest in the country. That also means it has the highest production costs of Campbell's four U.S. soup plants.
Campbell also plans to shutter a spice plant in South Plainfield, N.J. that has 27 employees. Production will be shifted to the company's other spice plant in Milwaukee.
Employees at the two closing plants were notified that there would be a meeting at 6 a.m. local time Thursday; about 400 workers showed up in California, where they were told of the closure.
"It's always difficult, even when there's a business case that is compelling," said Anthony Sanzio, a Campbell spokesman. "You're dealing with people, and this is going to impact 700 employees who've worked together closely for many years."
CEO Denise Morrison, who was been on the job for about a year, was not present at the meeting.

No urban legend. It was all thoroughly debated right here on FR. The macabre outfit doing the research is in Switzerland, and there were more clients than Campbells and Pepsico, of course.
At the time, both companies denied that they knew aborted fetal tissue was involved. But IMHO, due diligence requires that management KNOW those things.
Since I’m pro-life, I said to hell with ALL of them, anyhow! And it looks like Campbells might be headed in that direction! Of course, anyone who is pro-abortion couldn’t care less what’s done with the murdered children’s bodies! They might even find some kind of HUMOR in it!
P.S. I’ll try to find a link. That was months ago. Hopefully someone else here on FR will have a link that they can share.
Here you go. Check this out. As I said, it was thoroughly debated here on FR months ago.
Yep - all the old economy standby products now at what were premium price levels.
Here’s the link.
Now were are lucky to find it under a Buck a can.
Progresso's tomato soups are quite good -- try thhe Tomato Basil or the Hearty Tomato.
Try the grilled cheese using a slice of cheddar and a slice of provolone.
Yeah.... maybe in 1985. You can't even buy generic soups under a buck, unless they're on sale, for the past 3-5 years.
Even though prices are high we've been stocking up on soup the last few months because it is a certainty they will go a lot higher.
Where I live the Campbells vegetable soup, bean soup, etc are $1.75 regular price.
A year ago they were around $1.00 and less when on sale.
Now they are sometimes on sale for $1.25 or so.
Tomato and chicken noodle are still under $1.00 (barely) but no more two-for-$1.00 sales.
Aldi soups are pretty good but they only have a few varieties.
UPDATE!!! March 29, 2011 11:45AM ( from Children of God for Life)Within hours of our press release, Children of God for Life received notice from Campbell Soup that they have severed their ties with Senomyx.
Stated Juli Mandel Sloves, Senior Manager of Nutrition & Wellness Communications at Campbell Soup Company, We are no longer in partnership with Senomyx. This fact was discussed during the Senomyx conference call with its investors earlier this month.
If you choose to write to Campbell Soup, please thank them for their decision. Mmmm good!
According to that article, Campbell has stopped using the fetus ingredient.
This may or may not be true, but what I do know is that many factors have not been discussed or even mentioned.
First is the parsing of the announcement: falling demand for canned soups (as opposed to other type of containers.)
The chief a*****e in the California Legislature, something Steinberg, interpreted that for us as reduced demand for soup, generally. Why the distinction? Because Campbell's is either building or upgrading a new facility in another state! Why not California?
What kind of taxes is Campbell's paying in the Sacramento area? Is the local labor pool unionized? Are the labor pools in Texas and South Carolina non-union?
If Campbell's is building more modern facilities in other states, there must be something about California they don't like.
I am sure that the Sac Bee and the other MSM in the area have no interest in asking questions to clear that up.
Thanks Justaham.
People are dodging salt, and more to the point, don’t eat / serve as much soup either at home or restaurants.
Too funny!!!!!
I can’t understand for the life of me why anyone risk their reputation and fortune by ruining a good thing. Apparently, they didn’t learn much from the failed ‘new and improved’ Coca Cola fiasco.
So so true. I do the same thing.
I buy some chicken and vegetables and make my own low fat soup stock. After making my own the canned stuff makes me gag.
Thank you. It’s so easy to make soup why does anyone buy the canned stuff?!
Actual MUSHROOMS in it, hello :^)
For tomato soup I dice peeled tomatoes and cook them slowly before adding some cream or milk. Then just before taking it off the I add some fresh pureed tomatoes and let it set a few minutes.
I find this gives it more of a tomato taste.
No we could get them fairly regularly (Cambells as well as non-name brands) for 50 cents a can (not all just tomato and vegetable and such) but lately All soups are a buck a can or more.
But our area is usually well below others for food prices but that seems to be ending now.
Same with canned vegetables and canned corn. We could get them for 35 cents a can fairly regularly till about the beginning of the year now you are lucky to find any for 50 cents a can and usually 75 cents or more.
