It’s not just Bucks. It’s Philadelphia (expected), Bucks, Chester, Montgomery, and Delaware. The last four counties are what has placed PA out of reach since 1988.

If true, this is pretty depressing. But, frankly, its hard to believe things are this bad. PA just voted in a Republican governor and US senator two years ago.

I live in Montgomery County and drive Ridge Pike several times a week. I haven't traveled the full length of it, but I don't see what this guy is seeing. He's right that this is one of the wealthiest counties in the state. He could've found a lot worse economic signs just about anywhere else in the state.

The vacant lots and closed "Rite Aid" are an unrecognizable sign to me. And the potholed roads are an exaggeration. There has been a lot of road construction this year, more than usual, and a lot of roads are brand new. There are very few vacant places of business. New places like Target and Subway are always opening new locations and places like Walmart are rebuilding and expanding current ones. I've also seen a big, new office building being built not far from Ridge Pike. And the retail parking lots are all crowded on the weekends.

You want to see more of what he's describing, go to northeastern PA. That is an area in decline with vacant properties and bad roads. Montgomery and other suburban Philly counties are the most economically thriving in the state. I believe Montgomery, Chester and Bucks are among the richest counties in the nation.

Key statement in his article:

Not every house looks this way, but far more than you would think when viewing the overall demographics for Montgomery County.

It's all relative. He's selectively picking and choosing what he wants to tell you. They're a small amount of examples but as far as he's concerned, they're "far more than you would think." He is right that Norristown is the dump of Montgomery Country, but everyone knows that. It always has been. Yes, there's been a housing decline and general economic decline in the last 4 years. As far as I can tell, we are tracking along on a very average plane right along with the national statistics. There was no above-average collapse here. But it does feel like we're simply stagnating now, rather than recovering.

You are mistaken. I live in rural PA. This is the industrial Northeast, not the West. The Democrats you are talking about are not rural.

$$$$ But I asked the same question. Twice in two weeks. Mitt better get his butt in gear or its looking bad. He needs to stay in WI, MI, OH, VA, NC, Fl every week until the election. and Ryan needs to do the same. NO more speeches to AARP idiots. If you are a senior like me and have not compared other insurance rates against the crap AARP sells you are losing it. I have found better insurance terms for all my needs on the market. Most seniors do NOT belong to AARP so why talk to the folks who sold out for Obama Care. Geez. Rap this thing up. My advice for Mitt is to do what Debbie Wants a mans schwantz does...no matter the question talk about whatever you want to.

You may not buy it butit is the truth. Obama will get enough votes in Philly to win easily and the moron Casey will also win easily. Pa is a waste of time this year, Barack is black and that will bring a lot of Phiily voters to the polls. Usually about 120% of registered ones.

Hey genius, so you’re telling me that PA’ers never drive to Rehoboth Beach?

Thanks for proving my point about the nation’s most fattest, redneck, no class, bad tattoe wearing, idiots this nation has ever produced.

what a dummy.

Pennsylvania is not going to be one of the ten largest states much longer. It was #3 when I was born and through most of my childhood.

But, yeah, you're right. The demographic trend is alarming.

Here in Montgomery Co. OH where we have lost 5Fortune 500 companies in five years, we see tons of new building, especially mini-mansions of $500k to $1.5 m. I have no idea who is buying these but they are selling.

PA was never ever a “battleground” and hasn’t been since 1988.

The word in the streets is that these so-called "polls" are being manipulated with a view to creating public opinion, not reflecting it.

Kennedy, who was more conservative than Nixon, took PA in 1960.

the system still works to assign a victory to one or the other, but that will literally be unknown until the last ballot is counted ~ and will be a complete and utter surprise to the winner and the loser.

I think the "turnout model" for this election is going to be very different from any that the pollsters are using. This is the first time in my lifetime we're going to have a lot of hopeless people who think neither party can fix the nation's problems. I think it's going to be a "base" election, with enthusiasm only in the base of each party, and depressed turnout among "independent" and "swing" voters. Unfortunately, Obama's base has been getting the exact radical policy they wanted, and now even more with promises of tax increases and same-sex marriage. The Republican base has an enthusiastic ABO segment for sure, but they don't have a candidate that has a positive message that excites them. Hence that's why Obama is the likely winner in my opinion. He's going to turn out more of his base than the Republicans and win.

Pennsylvania is gravy to any political election strategy. If Romney wins PA, he wins OH, VA and FL, too. It’s a tier two state like NJ that teases the Republicans but always ends up in the Democrat camp.

The claim was "drop Philadelphia in Texas and watch the State turn blue". I responded that rural dems would overcome any favor that crap hole of a city would attempt to yield. Your dems have seemed to stay dems since the "Reagan Revolution" produced (elder Bush got Reagan's bounce) Republican victories. Ever since then your State has not overcome the rural dems who had a short epiphany in the 1980s. You are not understanding this reality, ie. you need more rural DEMS pulling for the Repub candidate. Rural Repubs may be a formidable political force State wide but in National elections you are not picking away the indies mand dems that Texas does.

ps. This HTML format combined with a mobile device's spell checker is a pain in the ass.
