The perils of designer tribalism "............Whatever the current object of adulation the wisdom of the East, tribal Africa, Aboriginal Australia, pre-Columbian America the message is the same: the absolute superiority of Otherness. The Third Worldist looks to the orient, to the tribal, to the primitive not for what they really are but for their evocative distance from the reality of modern European society and values.
It is all part of what Bruckner calls the enchanting music of departure. Its siren call is seductive but also supremely mendacious. Indeed, the messy reality of the primitive worldits squalor and poverty, its penchant for cannibalism, slavery, gratuitous cruelty, and superstitionare carefully edited out of the picture. In their place we find a species of Rousseauvian sentimentality. Rousseau is the patron saint of Third Worldism. Ignoring the real human race entirely, Rousseau wrote in a passage Bruckner quotes from the Confessions, I imagined perfect beings, with heavenly virtue and beauty, so sure in their friendship, so tender and faithful, that I could never find anyone like them in the real world. The beings with whom Rousseau populated his fantasy life are exported to exotic lands by the Third Worldist. As Rousseau discovered, the unreality of the scenario, far from being an impediment to moral smugness, was an invaluable asset. Reality, after all, has a way of impinging upon fantasy, clipping its wings, limiting its exuberance. So much the worse, then, for reality. As Bruckner notes, in this romance adepts were not looking for a real world but the negation of their own. . . . An eternal vision is projected on these nations that has nothing to do with their real history."....................

Fantastic piece and very insightful. Basically a case study in liberalism. All the best intentions (looked at in one way) with disastrous results (no matter how you look at it).
Suicide by Appeasement!
Sterling post, CW. Send it to Romney. Maybe it will keep his advisors awake to reality.
Thanks.
Huge bump on this this one, and a few pings.
NO, Mr. Daniel Greenfield , not our vision, their vision (the liberal "world savers" you mention), or even more narrowly his vision.
You're wrong in so many ways in making such a broad statement and I vehemently deny, and resent the implication, that I have any "blind spot" in my vision.
You can stow that pap!
Thanks for posting this excellent perspective. Now I understand the “thinking” behind oblunder’s expeditions in the middle east. Sad that our citizens are being sucked into his vision, moths to a fire. Hillary is especially blind and evil in this.
Good article! Great find!
Personally, I think it’s a little too soon to be speaking ill of the dead - Monday would have been a better decision.
On another note, I’d like to see the Wikileaks cables he referenced.
It’s nice to hear the grown up perspective, Thank you CW.
very well written piece. thank you for sharing it
“The photos that have been released, along with claims by Libyan jihadists that they sexually assaulted his corpse”
Even in death, “leading from the rear”.
Good read, thanks for posting.
Bump for resending from PC!

Excellent article - Thanks!
“... he was an avid student of Islam ... consistently strove to build the proverbial bridge...”
Sadly Stevens didn’t study enough to actually “get” it. All he had to do was read Gabriel Oussani and Hillaire Belloc’s book; “Moslems: Their Beliefs, Practices and Politics”. This book exposes the true nature of Islam without Rousseau’s pink cloud and its conclusions are based on actual history, i.e. reality.
Here are just two examples of the insights that Hillary and company need to absorb - and Romney’s team as well -
“Brotherly love is confined in Islam to Mohammmedans.” If Stevens had understood this concept from the beginning, the ambassador might have used a more wary approach, made less trusting decisions and might still be alive. (Decisions to overly trust Muslims earlier on - I don’t mean at the end.)
“Religion and the State are not separated in Islam” . This is the key concept that the liberals do not comprehend. Arab Spring?? Democracy?? Foolishness!! The religion of Islam teaches and bases its foreign policy on the premise that “The rights of non-Muslim subjects are of the vaguest and most limited kind, and a religious war is a sacred duty whenever there is a chance of success against the “Infidel”. Therefore, because there is no separation of church and state, crimes against the infidel will not be punished by the state.
Why are these elite Ivy leagues so blind to human nature and history?? And they consider themselves superior and more intelligent than the rest of us???
Baffling and terrifying at he same time because they are in power.
Fantastic article
Conservative talk show hosts should read the entire thing on their shows
“Once the US successfully overthrew Gaddafi and began focusing on stabilizing Libya, Stevens ceased to be a useful idiot...”
That is this struggle in a single sentence. Hilliary and Obama and all elitist egomaniacs believe islam is a useful tool to transform America/the world to their elitist vision, to destroy Christian/Constitutional culture. Obama, Hilliary et al believe they are in control and that islam is their puppet, but it is obvious islam is the more ruthless force and these elitists are the puppets and their fate will be just like Stevens.
