Canada's Conservative government said Friday it is shutting its embassy in Tehran and severing diplomatic relations with Iran, which Canada says is providing military assistance to Syria.
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said that the Canadian embassy in Tehran will close immediately and Iranian diplomats in Canada have been given five days to leave.
Baird, who serves in a government that is a staunch ally of Israel, said Iran is the most significant threat to global peace and security in the world today.

Why the RUSH to close it down? (sarc)
Haaretz is quoting Def Min Ehud Barak as moving away from a unilateral attack on Iran. There may be some significant division between the hawkish Bibi and Barak. If so, there will be no attack until the internal differences are resolved. Acting without Barak’s support destroys the ruling coalition and throws everything into question. Barak is genuinely seen as an Israeli military hero and even a personage as large and historic as Bibi would be unlikely to ignore him on so vital a matter.
Canada and Israel join forces to do what Obastard refuses to do.
Probably a very good idea. At least we don’t have one to close.
Isn’t breaking off diplomatic relations something you do when you’re very close to going to war? What if there was a war and the United States wasn’t invited? Yeah, right.
Just as in the 1967 war, the US government may be against them but the people are with them. It SUCKS because it led to the tragedy of the USS Liberty, but people have to remember, US policy was anti-Israel, and they probably WERE spying for the Gyps or the House of Saud. Probably not the Saudis, because as Wahabbists they HATED us then, and they hate us now. Our relationship is purely pecuniary.
1) If you think your diplomats are in danger because the host regime cannot or will not guarantee their safety. Probably true in this case.
2) You don't want the other country's diplomats in your country because of activities they are engaging in. Probably true in this case.
3) The other country is engaging in gross human rights abuses and/or has committed crimes against your citizens. True in this case.
4) You have reason to believe that your allies might engage in hostilities against the host nation soon. Probably true in this case.
So, there are several reasons to break off relations. Canada has had recent diplomatic problems with several mid east governments, notably:
1) Gaddafi's Libyan regime. PM Harper went so far as to refuse the dictator's request for landing and refueling privileges when he departed New York for Europe. The RCAF later participated in the Libyan operation.
2) Dubai, which tried to blackmail Canada in exchange for "allowing" the Canadian armed forces to continue to operate a logistics base for the Afghan operation. Canada closed the base and told them to go f*ck themselves.
3) The Canadian embassy in Iran was closed before, in 1980, to facilitate the repatriation of 6 American diplomats under Canadian protection. I think the Iranians are still smarting about that one, but we know who are friends are.
4) Canada was involved in Afghanistan for 10 years and took 158 fatalities. I don't think the taliban, AQ, or their allies like us much.
Even a small power doesn't have to be pushed around by thug regimes if you don't need their oil.

Disinformation perhaps?
Do you think they’ve seen the light?

A dark night. No moon. Let all hell just break loose. End it in 5 hours. I have spoken! Make it so.
From Haaretz?? I doubt that very much.
obama doesn’t care, and neither do his worshippers, if he’s caught in a lie. So, why would they leave Ju as the capital of Israel out of the platform? Does anyone believe putting it back in is going to make any difference?
And that Ladies and Gentlemen is why the Sauds have bought and owned our "Representatives" for the past 50 years!
Indeed.
