It was a no-lose proposition for the Republicans. If it didn’t go over well, it was comic relief. If it went over well, big polling uptick.
Big upside, next to no downside.
For my part I found it painful, moreso because I know this is a tier 1 veteran actor/director, and expected a smoother delivery.
>>I know this is a tier 1 veteran actor/director, and expected a smoother delivery.<<
He is not a stand up comedian. He is an actor. Given that he was supposed to have a teleprompter delivering his lines and said teleprompter fried out (conspiracy? /s/) or so the rumor goes, I think that 82 year old man did quite well. He went up cold. Imagine rehearsing your lines knowing that you had teleprompter back up and suddenly having to deliver without. Hellsbells, I’ve done the readings at church and messed up worse than Eastwood did.
I want to see BO do better.
AND as one bright FReeper said, it took Akin out of the headlines.
So.... you missed the subtleties as well ?
I had the same problem. I thought it was Clint having problems staying on focus. It wasn't. He was imitating Obama's tendency to wander and blather. Try listening to it again, and maybe you'll see he knew exactly what he was saying and doing.
As I said on another thread, Eastwood was mimicking Obama's speech patterns, and the MEDIA proclaimed Eastwood was acting like he was demented (feeble minded). What does that tell ya ?
Agree, too, with Applegateranch's comments on another thread about the genius of Eastwood's use of his object's own "egregious speech pattern," commonly referred to by pseudointellectual "progressives" as a sign of Obama's great intellect and deliberative style. Now, Eastwood's use of it, with "progressives" (an entire set of "empty chairs" when it comes to understanding and defending the ideas of freedom, such a "deliberate" and halting style denotes everything from senility to "doddering fool."
Another gem was his use of a former President's assessment of Romney's "stellar business performance" in this total unmasking of the great destroyer of business in America.
From Geraldo Rivera on FOX to Gloria Borger on CNN, the faux criticism and claims that Eastwood distracted from the Romney speech and Borger's claim that parts were "crass" are laughable when compared with much of the Dem performer language and inferences.
This was a priceless and iconic performance which will live on, long after Eastwood is gone, and Obama is a distant memory in the rearview mirror of presidents.
He IS 82 years old...
That was part and parcel of the presentation....
Do you honestly believe that Eastwood...with all his decades of top work as actor and director would come on a set with his hair all fluffed if he didn't tell his make up artist how he wanted it...and his portrayal of an old geezer from someone as smart as a tack and quick as a cobra....?
Game Set and Match to Clint
doc
the whole ol’ man delivery was part of the act. Think it was a parody of something from the ‘50’s
“For my part I found it painful, moreso because I know this is a tier 1 veteran actor/director, and expected a smoother delivery.”
I disagree. I believe Eastwood created a new Schtick and it was brilliant. Who will be the most sought after Convention speaker this year?
When I got over being sad about his age (and mine) I thought it was brilliant and knew he was imitating Jimmy Stewart talking to Harvey.
I think more people would have caught on immediately if he had a empty suit hanging up there but the chair was good too.
