WASHINGTON, DC, August 29, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) A poll of likely Missouri general election voters released this morning shows that, far from being out of the race, embattled Senate candidate Todd Akin has regained his lead over Senator Claire McCaskill by a 45% to 42% margin, with 13% undecided.
The survey conducted by Wenzel Strategies commissioned by Family Research Council Action also shows Akin leading by 10 points among independent voters.
“Despite the firestorm of news in the Senate race over the past few weeks, most voters have already made up their mind in the race, the survey shows, said Wenzel Strategies pollster Fritz Wenzel. The fact that 80% said they were firm in their choice certainly indicates that this is a race that will be decided more by ideology and turnout efforts by the campaigns and less by breaking news that flashes across the news pages and cable news channels.”
Wenzel also observed that McCaskill holds a 58% lead over Akin among very liberal voters, but that pales compared to Akins 81% to 5% lead among very conservative voters in Missouri.
Family Research Council Action PAC Chairman Tony Perkins was unequivocal in his support for Akin. Throughout his career, Todd Akin has consistently fought for legislation that honors marriage, human life, religious freedom, and national security, he said.
He also has a long record of opposing the commodification of women - in stark contrast to his opponent and liberal detractors, who promote groups like Planned Parenthood while ignoring how abortion harms them.
Perkins noted that McCaskill has supported taxpayer funding for abortion on demand. She came to the Senate claiming to govern from the center but has instead been a steadfast supporter of President Obama and his liberal policies, he said.
The Family Research Council telephone poll was conducted by Wenzel Strategies from Aug. 27 to Aug. 28, testing 829 voters for a margin of error of plus or minus 3.38 percent. The sample was 32.7 percent Democrats, 34.1 percent Republicans and 33.2 percent independents.
No, it's because democrats understand you don't let your opposition "frame the debate."
Agreeing with your opponent on objective facts is perfectly legitimate. Agreeing with them on "opinion" (read: partisan interpretation) is abject stupidity.
“The problem with Akin is that hell keep making mistakes.”
Take a look at his record. He is a true conservative. Maybe he should have been accused of rape/sexual assault or gotten a BJ from an intern, then we would back him.
Hang in there Todd don’t let the b**tards knock you down.
Akin said a stupid thing, but that has rarely been a disqualifier for a politician. People have short memories.
This guy may not play well with the RINO GOPers that is why they wanted him out.
Don’t be gullible enough to take this survey as a victory, and that Akin’s blunder has been overcome.
The DEMS have not even begun to exploit it. I wish it were not so.
I don’t doubt that Akin is a good man, a conservative man.
But, as I have said before, all I really care about is defeating McCaskill and Obama.
Whatever it takes.
I don’t care if Akin’s career is over.
I don’t care if his supporters are upset.
I don’t care if he apologizes for the next 10 years.
If Akin really cared about Pro-Life issues, he would withdraw.
Although I want to believe this poll, I think the latter explanation may be correct. I'm among those who thought he should be replaced and I still do, but I'd love to be proved wrong on this.
If YOU really cared about Pro-life issues, you wouldn't be lipping the democrat narrative about him.
Yes, sure, ignoring the obvious will make it go away.
The only thing “obvious” here is democrats get away with gaffes all the time, because they don’t have “supporters” the likes of YOU.
So what? Are you opposed to this pro-life Christian ministry?
This is Free Republic. Take your anti-Christian bent elsewhere.
Ah, shut up,would you? We’re tired of your anti-conservative comments. You are only serving as a tool for the McCaskill camp. Akin is in to win; support him or get out of the way.
So you are perfect then and you say that his comment, while some disagreed did not meet your standards so all must follow your lead?
If he just disappears then you had the race to McCaskill, which in some ways I suspect would make you happy.
Odd
I am not going to bandy insults with you. Have a nice day!
Then how about giving a substantive reason why a minor gaffe disqualifies Akin, other than the a bunch of liberals screaming "game over," and people like you agreeing with them?
This is redundant, but I will humor you.
This may be a minor gaffe to you, but to the Dems it is a gift! The Dems will use this statement by Akin as a virtual club to beat the conservative candidates as soon as it is too late for him to withdraw. This is real world, dirty, Missouri democrat politics, and they will destroy Akin.
Akin has been pretty scarce since this happened. If he can’t face the people now, what will he do in the last few weeks of the campaign?
If you think the dems are finished exploiting this, you are naive.
Sorry, but I will not respond further unless you are a Missouri voter.
How about answering the question?
We already know the democrat narrative.
You won’t respond again, because you’ve been suckered into parroting the liberal party line and lack the intellectual integrity to admit it.
If it weren’t for people like you, Palin would be our nominee.
I guess the Missouri folks got a bit curious about what Akin’s meant to say despite the radical meme promoted by the hysterical idiots.
“Just one isolated poll. Rasmussen has him down by 10”
I sense that the polls for the Missouri Senate race are in a high state of flux, and it’s going to take two to three more weeks before things settle down there and we get a clearer picture as to what Mr. Akin’s chances may be, after “the fog of the media moment” clears off.
I don’t believe that Mr. Akin will be relinquishing his candidacy. He’s gonna stay in and fight to the end — a spirit that demonstrates an intestinal fortitude that too many folks in this forum seem to have forgotten about.
For that reason, the RNC’s decision to continue to withhold support — even if the races “evens out” — shows why the Pubbies have aptly won for themselves the right to be called “the stupid party”.
The party can refuse to support him, and he may lose (or he may win anyway).
But they would be better off to provide at least some measure of support, both advisory and financial, with the chance that he can win.
Frankly we need all the votes we can get in Congress. Mr. Akin’s vote may make a difference, especially when his conservative record is brought to bear.
If Todd Akin can pull this off without the support of the national party, he is going to become an influential conservative at the national level. How many folks here remember Jesse Helms?
