Mitt Romney officially clinched the GOP presidential nomination on Tuesday to move a step closer in his five-year quest for the White House.
To roaring cheers at the Republican National Convention in the packed Tampa Bay Times Forum, the delegation from New Jersey put Romney above the 1,144-delegate threshold, ensuring he will be the GOP challenger against President Barack Obama in November.
Earlier, the 2,200-plus convention delegates approved a conservative platform that called for less government, opposed same-sex marriage and endorsed a "human life amendment" to ban abortion with no specific exceptions for cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is threatened.
Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, will be formally nominated on Thursday, and Romney's acceptance speech that night will conclude the convention that had its agenda delayed by Hurricane Isaac.
With the storm churning toward landfall in Louisiana, Republican officials appeared determined to stick to a tightened three-day schedule that kicked into full gear on Tuesday with official business and speeches accusing Obama of failed leadership and undermining the American dream...

“They did; but it is open so that Romney and his ilk can make the changes without our permission.”
Dont think we are going to have to worry about that. The way the establishment is behaving towards the base enthusiasm will wane and hating Obama will not motivate enough to win the election.
The lesser of two evils is still evil.
The big question is who will be the best candidate to run against Hillary in 2016 after Obama finished the country and his next term. Hopefully we will have a conservative to run against whats left of the republican party and the democrats.
This the first time I have heard Ted Cruz speak, and I like what I see and hear.
I’m with you SunkenCiv.
Make no mistake. From this moment forward I will work and vote for romneyRYAN, and I will enthusiastically exhort others to do the same, but, after today - once they are duly elected, I will begin to work in earnest to seat as many genuine conservative Constitutionalists as I can at the local, state and federal level, and to push for term limits, with a long term goal of turning every one of these usurpers out, and I will admit Lord, that I will feel a special joy at defeating the false compatriots within our own ranks.
No more career politicians. Citizen Statesmen All.
May God guide our course and share His strength, because Lord, we are going to need it.

Yes so if Romney botches on his repeal promise or goes for amnesty no conservative can mount a primary challenge. He is not Obama put I will never drink the GOP kool aid, in fact I am not any of the coronation ceremony.
I feel the same way. I do not feel comfortable with Romney. His flip flop on abortion bothers me but it could be genuine.
The bottom line, O has got to go!
I’ll vote for Romney as well in November.
Hey, the democrats think that's a winner for them and all they have to do is step up the propaganda on The Republican War on Women©.
To the true conservatives on this web site; how about fighting the democrats and media on this for, say, about the next 3 (not even) months? After all, isn't this plank one of the very things you wanted but were sure you weren't going to get?
Bleh
Thanks. You've put that very succinctly. As angry as I am about the Romney power grab he still isn't BHO. I needed a reality check.
Good job!
Those bitching about how the votes were conducted at the convention have Boehner to thank, but of course they won’t.
Thanks! And g’night all!
The positions on the two most important issues to liberal left college students are the same positions to libertarian right college students: free sex and drugs. Why wouldn't they vote for the same candidate?
Thanks NT!
Agreed.
But I guess my point was this:
We have a real fight on our hands, this isn’t just lazing in front of a computer havng a war of words with people who don’t agree with you 100% (even if they’re 95%)...
This is turning out to be the election that conservatives said they wanted—liberal, rabid, baby killing democrats versus some seriously Pro-Life Republicans.
The choice before us is stark.
Are you going to fight, or slink off and nurse your pride?
Don’t waste your vote on Virgil or Tom or Gary... Do know that Barack is the beneficiary if you do. Notice I didn’t say the ABR’s are purposely aiding Obama, just that he is the beneficiary of any vote that doesn’t go to his prime opponent in November.
Does God support the Mormon with the most Pro-Life plank in our history, or does He want you to vote for the anti-Christian, anti-Chik-Fil-A-holes?
Think about it clearly. These are the choices He’s laid before us. Choose wisely.
Game on.
Good! Now he can stop the pretense of running for president and throw all his foolish sponsors under the bus. Watch him curtsy in Obammy’s corner whenever he gets the chance.
Hi Mary... I just do not know what to think about the future... at least not tonight. I am disgusted and the gop is corrupt. Those are my thoughts at this time.

Well, it didn't did it?
And, my God, if Bob Dole couldn't pull it off, who could?
