Romney officially clinches nomination at condensed GOP convention

Mitt Romney officially clinched the GOP presidential nomination on Tuesday to move a step closer in his five-year quest for the White House.

To roaring cheers at the Republican National Convention in the packed Tampa Bay Times Forum, the delegation from New Jersey put Romney above the 1,144-delegate threshold, ensuring he will be the GOP challenger against President Barack Obama in November.

Earlier, the 2,200-plus convention delegates approved a conservative platform that called for less government, opposed same-sex marriage and endorsed a "human life amendment" to ban abortion with no specific exceptions for cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is threatened.

Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, will be formally nominated on Thursday, and Romney's acceptance speech that night will conclude the convention that had its agenda delayed by Hurricane Isaac.

With the storm churning toward landfall in Louisiana, Republican officials appeared determined to stick to a tightened three-day schedule that kicked into full gear on Tuesday with official business and speeches accusing Obama of failed leadership and undermining the American dream...

Paraphrasing Heinlein: “The difference between bad and worse is always much more noticeable than the difference between good and better.” Obama is most definitely worse.

Much as I hate having the (only realistic) choice being between these two, “O Gotta Go!”

Zero has to go, because it’s quite literally him or us.

And “him or us” isn’t “lesser of two evils”. He has to go. Period.

I don't like Romney and I particularly dislike Romniacs.

But I agree with you SunkenCiv. The communist has to be driven from office. We can worry about fighting Romney the day after the inauguration and for the next four years after that. I may wind up third party before the year is out, but that comes after January.

Leaving O in office isn't an option.

Oh, I don’t disagree with you on Mitt Romney, but compared to Barack Obama, almost anyone looks good.

There’s going to be a bunch of people drinking a big glass of reality, now that the loony dream of imposing a minority’s will on the majority finally has its head carried out on a pole.

Yup, the Ron Paul kooks can go away now. Paul got about 10% of the primary vote and he got about 10% of the delegates. That is about how it should have gone. The Paultards caused some trouble at a few of the state conventions, but the local, state and national Republicans are ready for these people now. It's over for Paul in the GOP. Paul and his supporters were never going to vote for the eventual GOP nominee (probably the majority will vote for Obama like they did last time), and there is no reason the party should take paulbots seriously. Go to any Paul forum and you can see how much they hate the GOP platform - specifically things like the pro-life planks, the support for Israel, etc.

So any Paulbots reading this. Welcome to reality. None of your silly talk panned out. Go away. The Republican party may have reacted slowly, but your stunts at the local/state level will be harder to pull off next time around. Then again, it really doesn't matter - your guy is too old to run again. Please go make a nuisance of yourself in the Democrat party. Heck, I'd be rooting for you if you did - a libertarian takeover of the Democrat party would be a very good thing.

In November I will, and will be happy to do it.

Yup, same. Romney/Ryan or Obama/Biden. That is the choice. Those are the options. Romney/Ryan is vastly superior to Obama/Biden.

I am through with the GOP if they don’t get their act together.

I will vote for Romney if for no other reason than four more years of Obama damage may be too great for the country to bear.

If Romney manages to win but then does not govern as a conservative, however, I will either work to defeat him in the primaries or will look to embrace a serious third party alternative (if one exists). For now though, the number one issue is beating Hussein Obama.

In order to pull that off, we are all going to need to put aside our differences one more time and pull together so we can send the Kenyan back home to Chicago where he can do no more damage to our beloved country.

I look at it this way: If the election this year were between Hubert Humphrey and Adolf Hitler, which way would you vote?

You are correct and let me add that we’ve learned from the past, that is conservatives have. If, and it is a big if, the GOP sweeps it, we need to expect pandering, stupidity and back tracking. But, a tactic once understood is no longer a tactic. Look to lynchpin issues as our victory points. We need to do two things: 1. move the ball toward our goals in such a way that turning back will be politically untenable and 2. win election after election for a generation or more.

Nothing’s going to change over just one election cycle. FDR didn’t change everything in one term. We have to fight hard year to year, but keep the long game in mind - getting our Constitutional Republic back.

America was the first revolution to truly succeed and advance liberty. Forget Rome, forget Greece and all the ancient history of liberty won and lost. History never foresaw the rise of America. Let’s be the first republic to regain the Republic from the jaws of oligarchy.

Look above this thread for at least two threads covering the story. One has over 400 posts... and I heard Morton Blackwell on Mark Levin's show... interviewed from the floor of the convention.

Paul is pro-life, but yeah I think all the libertarian leaning GOP voters will go someplace else, not to Obama that is for sure but probably to some 3rd party. And quite likely the social conservatives will also go 3rd party to since Romney is pro abort and pro homosexual. Maybe yall can hang on to fiscal conservatives, maybe. But constitutional conservatives are not going to like the gun grabbing Romney to much either. But I will give you this, yall got a lock on the country club votes. Good luck winning with that.

This is what our party stands for. If we don't stand up for our own principles, no one will.

Our flagbearer is a flawed individual (and they always are). Our principles are what we stand for regardless of who is up there on the podium. Its just this time, if we've learned anything, we know we can't afford to go on auto-pilot between elections. We have to fight the marxists and then we have the fight the Boehners too. Its a full-time job.

Thanks, Sunk.

That’s what I think too, but the peanut gallery is needing a great big diaper change by now, and they’re still at it. I’m done with debate. Not good for my health these days.

Let’s hope that you (and I) are right about this. And hope that all the shouting cools off.

PLEASE EVERYONE, I’M SERIOUS ABOUT MY HEALTH....SO DON’T TRY TO GOAD ME INTO SOMETHING I’LL REGRET. THNX.

“I’m hoping that Mitt Romney gets struck down by God after he wins the election, letting Paul Ryan become President. That’s the best case scenario for conservatives, the best case scenario for America, and the best case scenario for freedom.”

i counter that the best case scenario for America is a new president-elect come January 2013.
