Akin scandal hands Missouri to Obama
weeklystandard.com ^ | August. 24, 2012 | Paul Bedard

If the Republican Party needed any more proof that Missouri Republican Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin was poison to all GOP-ers, they've got it in a new Missouri presidential poll just published by Rasmussen Reports.

After consistently trailing Mitt Romney in Missouri, President Obama is now beating him. It's by just one point, 47 percent to 46 percent, but it represents a big change from Romney's 50 percent-46 percent lead he had a month ago. Worse for the Republican: Romney has led in Missouri all year--until the Akin "legitimate rape" scandal.

The poll could be proof that the scandal has wounded Romney and Republicans and that the Democratic attacks on the Republican is causing voters to reassess Romney. Rasmussen revised his election projection for Missouri, moving it from "lean Romney" to "toss-up."

Just yesterday, he reported that Akin is 10 points behind embattled Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Only a kin of Akin will vote Akin.

I suppose I’m the only one surprised at how FReepers have turned on a pro life candidate like Akin. Are democrats the only ones who are allowed to revise and extend their remarks?

I think I’ll wait until the actual election, rather than taking my opinions from a beltway RINO magazine.

I am a rock solid intelligent strict construction conservative . . but when I heard senatorial candidate Akin talk about “legitimate rape””, I changed my mind and I am going to vote for Mcaskill.

Akin isn't losing the rock solid intelligent strict construction conservatives. He's losing the swing voters. You know, those people who decide elections.

Apparently ... not.

“Obama’s Democratic support in the state remains largely unchanged at 96%, and voters not affiliated with either major party still favor Romney by 20 points. But Republican support in Missouri for the party’s likely nominee has fallen from 94% in late July to 85% now,”

"I don’t believe the polls."

The polls are probably right. They reflect a reaction to the silly hysteria over a questionable statement. They will begin to snap back in the other direction, when Republicans stop fanning that hysteria with idiotic over-reactions!

As stated before, I do not agree with Cong. Akin's point. I do not believe that there is anyway that his statement will materially affect what happens in 2 1/2 months, unless Republicans continue this internecine warfare against each other, over such a non-issue.

I could personally outline all sort of ways to counter the effect shown in the polls--indeed the over reaction already affords an opportunity to do so--provided Republicans start displaying a little calm, intelligent sense of proportion & relevance over this.

Please, folks, take a deep breath and realize how silly this is getting.

Does this mean Akin is stupid, or Missouri voters are stupid?

No! it means Republicans are stupid. Republicans are doing what they do best, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Atkin should have been supported heavily from the start. Atkin is among the twelve or so most conservative politicians in Washington. Now because we cried “forgive us” he might not be there any more.

how FReepers have turned on a pro life candidate like Akin.

Akin now is HURTING the pro-life cause. If we lose the Senate, how will those hearings go on new Supreme Court justices? If Akin is making us pro-lifers look like dumb idiots, what good is that? If Akin is giving ammo to the Dems--NATIONALLY--for their "War on Women" theme, how does that help the cause? Look, there are other pro-life conservative candidates here in Missouri who could step in and take Akin's place and probably win.

Some of the same people who are backing Akin now were dumping on Jeff Flake (NRTL -100; NARAL -0) only four weeks ago.

There are two months between now and the election. Akin is not dropping out. After the knee jerk reactions, the local grass roots and tea party types are coalescing around him. Some are loudly defending him. There is no other pro-life conservative candidate in Missouri that could in two months pull enough of the electorate away from both McCaskill and Akin to beat them both. That's the reality of it. The people of Missouri will either support him, or not, based upon how successfully he represents them and how badly they want to remove McCaskill. I'm willing to bet when the curtain closes, they'll pull the lever for Akin, and the majority of them will do so happily. Throwing in an unknown, or a write-in, or a sour grapes second place contender would be a clear indication the GOP feels it more important to squash a solid conservative than to gain a conservative seat in the Senate. That would be telling.

My opinion is that this week is not the week to give much credence to polls.... Why, people are busy, vacations, and back to school.... That is also a problem because of the need to ‘wait’ factor cuts into valuable time to gain the attention of those coveted moderates...

But old Claire is NOT wasting time, she has put on a ‘moderate’ costume bragging about how moderate she is and one would think she did not even know who Obama is.

Akin is delusional. Missouri voters are ANGRY.

Akin can fix this. The sooner he exits (by Sept 25), the sooner we can get back to defeating McCaskill and focus on Obama.

That’s the biggest over the top part of this. Where did you find that it is pro-abortion Democrats funding his campaign? I hope you are not going to trot out her, “He’s too conservative” ad campaign.

The GOP will need to prioritize Missouri amid the Akin controversy. Remember that in 2008, McCain won the state by fewer than 4000 votes.
