The Star’s editorial | GOP can’t avoid Todd Akin — or abortion
Kansas City Star ^ | 8/21/12 | Editorial Staff

They phoned. They wrote. They rebuked him publicly from coast to coast. They cut off funding and support.

Yet Republican U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin didn’t cave. He refused to withdraw by the initial 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline, sticking with his November race against Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill.

His choice means women’s health and abortion remain top issues, causing a debate the GOP had hoped to avoid.

Akin, who says he misspoke when he said “legitimate rape” victims can prevent pregnancy, has a long voting record against abortion in any circumstance.

Akin also is in line with U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, with whom he co-sponsored abortion legislation, in favoring an amendment providing rights to fetuses at the moment of conception. This effectively stops all abortions, including in the cases of rape or incest.

For Republicans objecting to Akin’s misstatements, it gets more complicated at their national convention next week when the final party platform is adopted.

Presumptive GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and now-running mate Ryan are on record in support of abortion in cases of rape. Yet, the proposed platform espouses the no-exceptions position held by Akin. In addition, Romney’s positions on abortion have ranged from an early pro-choice posture to the current promises to defund Planned Parenthood and ban abortions.

President Barack Obama clearly stated the difference this week. For him, a rape is a rape. And in a welcome addition, he said it’s wrong for predominantly male lawmakers to make these kinds of health care decisions for women.

Amen.

While the anti-government, free-the-individual GOP often argues against government interference, they are all in for government control and limited access on abortion and birth control.

Ann Wagner and the former US Senator, Kit bond.

You are totally right. This should not have happened. The focus should be on the immediate dire economic situtation.

Instead of talking about the bad economy, the struggling economy in the state of Missouri, the empty office space in cities in St. Louis because businesses are being attacked - mind you, all caused by democraps; we are now defending ourselves that we are not the party of rape. Stupid.

The Dems had already targeted Akin and Ryan on this issue given their co-sponsorship of legislation on funding abortion due to rape.

The Dems control the MSM. It was always going to be an issue. Ryan will not be able to avoid it. Better now than later.

Oh really? I must have missed Barky coming to the defense of Juanita Broaderick.

Democrats are such flippin’ hypocrites.

Writein votes don’t work in Missouri. It is too late to mount a third party candidate also. Also, to do so will alienate SOCON Republicans here in Missouri. That could cost Myth this state as well.

I don't see why you say they "don't work" in Missouri. There's no prohibition except against those who lost to Akin. it's not "too late" to mount a third party campaign if it's as a write-in.

Real SOCON Republicans WANT to win. They're not as suicidal as some around these parts. Akin admitted Tuesday with Sean Hannity there are thousands in Missouri who could do as well as he can talking and advocating these issues. And yet, somehow, he is clinging to hope of greater power and a bigger payday.

He's dead wrong to stay. However, he even left himself an escape window by saying he'll review the polls next month since there's another deadline in September as if the writing isn't already on the way for his candidacy.

What will you and the dozen others think if he does come to his senses and quits leaving the party's replacement just a few weeks to pull together a candidacy to defeat McCaskill?

You all make the foolish mistake believing his replacement will necessarily be anything other than a common sense, pro-life, conservative. He might be the last two but he falls well short on the first criteria.

Akin maybe kicked out of the GOP tomorrow.

I would rather they kick Romney out of the GOP since he is a complete liberal. He and Obama are 100 percent closer to each other than Akin and Obama. God Bless Akin and his family. You are a patriot Todd Akin!

Abortion is murder, a national tragedy, but it ain’t the end=all or be=all this time around.

Abortion is way more important than jobs. You are completely a liberal. Abortion should be the number one issue EVERY election. Well thanks to Akin and his patriotism, this election will FINALLY see abortion in the forefront. I am proud of Akin for his principles and he is putting baby murders ahead of everything. God Bless him!

Obama is a Christian. He attended rev Wright’s church for decades. As far as I can see, his being a Christian has’nt done us much good, has it?

Wright's "Liberation Theology" is to Christianity as is "Christian Identity," just the other side of the coin.
