Republican Representative Todd Akin resisted pressure to quit the U.S. Senate race in Missouri on Tuesday, releasing a new ad apologizing for his inflammatory remarks about rape that have reinserted controversial abortion politics into the U.S. presidential campaign.
In an ad released online, Mr. Akin again apologized for his comments Sunday, when he claimed in a television interview that women could not get pregnant from legitimate rape, even as senior Republicans condemned his remarks and called for him to step aside in the race.
Rape is an evil act. I used the wrong words in the wrong way, and for that I apologize, Mr. Akin said in the spot.
The fact is, rape can lead to pregnancy. The truth is, rape has many victims. The mistake I made was in the words I said, not in the heart I hold. I ask for your forgiveness, he added. Mr. Akin, noting that he is the father of two daughters, also said he wanted tough justice for rapists and expressed compassion for victims.

Offer him a juicy job in your Administration if he withdraws. Like Undersecretary of HHS.
Akin can do a lot of pro-life good in this position.
By my clock he has got about an hour and three min. to drop out!
My sentiments exactly!
“Apparently Akin is staying in. Yeah, let the Dims set the agenda thats the ticket.”
They already set the agenda when they spent 1.5 million to engineer this blithering idiot in the Republican primary to be McCaskill’s opponent. This loose cannon will have more spent on his campaigns by Dems than Republicans when all is said and done.
Exactly. If you have to deny you’re a witch or that you DON’T support rape, murder or killing cute little puppies, you’ve already lost.
overreaction!?!
Akin’s the one that made the ad of apology
On top of everything, he goes an apologizes.
An apology has never, and will never work.
He would be better off just saying, “I meant what I said”, and leave it at that.
Achin.
Question: After the general election, if the GOP has 50 Senate votes, can they still repeal Obamcare via reconciliation? I thought “yes” but wanted to make sure.
If so, hope none of the RINOs get cold feet.
“I am sorry I am an incomptent, clueless dullard; Now send me to the Senate please!” - yeah that will work. I’m so proud to be a Republican right now.
Actually, I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention or not, but the Dems desperately want this guy IN, badly, so much that McCaskill was giving interviews and reiterating that he should stay.
They know this guy is a chump and they don’t want to face the possibility of an actually competent candidate showing up. McCaskill is extremely vulnerable but she’s going to wail on Akin.
pro-life and abortion is not the issue.
So after pissing and moaning and 5 O’clock passes by where Akin stays in the race. Are you guys still going to have your circular firing squads shooting at Akin for the next 2 1/2 months until November 6th to help get McCaskill elected? It sure seems like it. That’s self-defeating and self-fulfilling and losers keep it up.
So do a lot of other recently joined people. The democrats also want him to stay in. Gee...I wonder why?
Too late...past 5 o’clock. Alot of you will owe Patriot Akin a big apology when he wins in November!
I think the issue is that he was so unprepared to answer a question that he should have been prepared to answer. He wasn’t only wrong, he was stunningly wrong.
His position can be rationally explained, it’s just that what he said isn’t the way to do it. Nowhere even close.
That more people don’t see that with clarity is astonishing.
When you retract your statement, you are in effect debating yourself.
Akin can debate his two positions on rape while Mittens can debate his state mandated Obamacare with Barry's federally mandated Obamacare.
The country be crying out for leadership and the Republicans are offering candidates who be debating with themselves.
Just release yourself from the race, you arrogant pr*ck!
“Why are so many Republicans against a pro-life conservative politician”
Akin is a coward. He only got in trouble because he tried to justify his prolife position by claiming that pregnancy is impossible in cases of rape. The man is an idiot. He should leave.
McCaskill and her campaign staff have the champagne broken out for when the ball drops at 5PM today. New Years Day came early for them.
