A Chesterfield County man and Marine veteran is in a local hospital after being picked up by federal and local law enforcement officials concerned about threatening Internet postings.

Brandon J. Raub, 26, was in Hopewell's John Randolph Medical Center on Saturday.

"I'm currently in John Randolph in the psychiatric ward being held against my will," Raub said in a telephone interview.

Reports of his detention Thursday have gone viral on the Internet.

Raub said Secret Service, FBI and Chesterfield police officers came to his home Thursday. "They were concerned about me calling for the arrest of government officials," he said.

He was taken to the Chesterfield police station and then to the hospital, he said.

Raub said he does not own a gun.

Thanks Texas Gal. I was agreeing with his post until he got to the 9-11 stuff. Still, it seems there are many on Facebook and other forums that are of similar belief. I’m guessing they have more on this guy.

If calling for the arrest of all the corrupt elected officials was a detainable offense we don’t have enough jail cells to hold everyone.

Actually, he didn’t say “corrupt”....he mentioned evil, etc. but not corrupt....I believer what actually cemented the weak, non prosecuted case against him was a comment to the effect that he would “....act himself.....” weak as it is. That’s why he’s being held - for a better defended psychiatric pretext.

He expressed his disdain in a forum that is inhabited by many people that are not afraid to drop a dime on him by saying they were “scared and afraid he’s a gun rampaging terrorist” even though he says he doesn’t own a gun.

If you feel the need to publicize yourself to the world, do it on Facebook where even the mouth-breathing liberal ideologue is just itching to take a conservative to the wood shed.

Because he had not done anything illegal, he has not been arrested. But when somebody writes or says something that sounds threatening or menacing, most states allow ‘detention’ for psychiatric evaluation, for up to but not more than two weeks. If they are not severely mentally ill, which is obvious, they are then released.

And this happens a lot. Potential suicides, public breakdowns that are unresponsive, even disorientation and confusion (often by elderly without identification), and yes, what are interpreted as unfocused threats. Many are called in by family members.

The police are not too gleeful about doing this, because most short term psychiatric facilities are booked solid with “two weekers”. And they cannot give serious drugs to most of them.

I am watching this one closely. I want to see what the accusations are against this man. So far, it looks like an overreaction on the part of government. I’ll have to see more to convince me otherwise.

He better have a 72 hour TDO tomorrow morning or he is going to get a nice payday from Chesterfield County, John Randolph Hospital and the city of Hopewell when he files the civil lawsuit.

Virginia has fairly strict laws on his behalf and if they are not followed, a bunch of state inspectors are going to come down on that Hospital like a ton bricks. They have until Monday morning to give him a hearing or he walks. You cannot do back to back 48 hour holds in Virginia, but you can hold over the weekend. They could arrest him again once he gets out, but Chesterfield County will have to charge him with something and hold him in the regional jail.

I doubt they will do anything other than release him. He hasn’t broken any laws. But right now a lot of police are in a CYA mode, scared that they will let a real nut loose, and he will promptly try to kill a bunch of people.

If someone can maintain for a weekend in the equivalent of a padded cell, but much nicer, it is highly unlikely they are a threat.

now it gets interesting, he had his hearing and they decided to hold him for 30 days on a Mental Health warrant which normally has a pretty high bar to reach. More details here.

When a person is undergoing a psychiatric diagnosis, a key indicator of mental illness is that they tell the psychiatrist “what they really think”.

It actually makes sense, in that a sane person is at least somewhat scared, concerned for his well being, and doesn’t want to be seen as a kook. So sane people adjust their behavior to appear to be extra stable, not say things that are intended to disturb, and don’t talk about things they might truly believe, that they think others will see as abnormal. The proof of their sanity is that they are able to do this.

However, a person who is mentally ill is often too distracted or exhausted to make the effort. Importantly, this often does not indicate what kind of mental illness is at work, just that the person is mentally ill enough that it needs to be determined what their mental illness is, and what, if any, underlying cause it has.

Surprisingly, one of the biggest indicators of mental illness is that, when a person is asked if they think they are mentally ill, they reply “yes”.

I heard on the radio this afternoon that the Rutherford Institute is helping him file an appeal of the judge’s ruling.
