In the first week since Paul Ryan joined Mitt Romney on the Republican ticket, something subtle yet fundamental has happened to the country--something not yet reflected in poll numbers or punditry: the mantle of leadership has shifted.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden (certainly the latter) occupy office but cannot be said to govern in any meaningful way beyond formalities. Obama avoids the media; Biden has been sent back to Delaware; and their vast auxiliary army of super PACs and community organizers is reduced to petty sniping and personal attacks. No one expects any truly new ideas or proposals to come out of the Obama campaign anymore. It is telling that the only real debate this week was between Romney and Ryan's Medicare policies, not Obama's.
The honest reflections of the more thoughtful voices on the American left confirm that Romney and Ryan are, in effect, leading the country. First there was William Saletan of Slate, who wrote--without irony: "A wonderful thing has happened for this country. Paul Ryan will be the Republican nominee for vice president." He added that Republicans like Ryan were the perfect antidote to Democratic excesses: "Maybe, like me, you were raised in a liberal household. You dont agree with conservative ideas on social or foreign policy. But this is why God made Republicans: to force a reality check when Democrats overpromise and overspend."
That reaction found echoes in praise for Ryan offered by veteran Democrat Erskine Bowles of the president's own fiscal commission, among others. Other Democrats--notably former Virginia governor Douglas Wilder, the state's first African-American governor, and none too impressed with Biden's offensive appeals to racial resentment--began to consider crossing party lines to support the Republican ticket, even if just this once.

What is there for democRats to celebrate with unemployment climbing in 44 states in July?
All that is left for democRats is to distract, personal attacks, hate and loathing. If you want proof, go lurk on DUmmies. There is not a single positive thread touting accomplishments by ObaMao.
Privately, I sort of date this paradigm shift to about the moment Obama famously announced to the world, “You didn’t do that.”
To those who had been neutral or somewhat favorable toward him, this was an almost instantaneous turn-off. Suddenly, they saw the antagonism, the desperation, the outright HATRED of the “can-do” spirit of the American entrepreneur, and they did not like what they saw.
He ain’t ever gonna be able to unring that bell.
This paints too rosey a picture. Half the country is on the dole. It’s going to be a close election.
Now’s when he gets dangerous.
Now’s when he gets dangerous.
Now’s when he gets dangerous.
I built both of my businesses with more tears than cash and not one gubm’t dime. When my wife and adult children heard that statement from Obama they were floored. Most of them use to be non-political.
They are now very aware and scared by the things coming from the mouth of this,a sitting “U.S President”.
You got that damn straight. The Romney/Ryan campaign has only just begun to mine that rich vein of pure gold. Obama will never live that one down and "you didn't build that" will become the epitaph on the tombstone of his failed one-term presidency.
Now the Obama people have been trying to "walk back" this comment by saying that it was being taken out of context. Well when you look at the full context of that comment, it comes off even worse and even more anti-American.
I was able to pull the full speech off the web and here is the full context...
There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. They know they didnt -- look, if youve been successful, you didnt get there on your own. You didnt get there on your own. Im always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something - there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If youve got a business -- you didnt build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didnt get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.
So taken in full context, Obama looks even worse. He is saying that wealthy, successful Americans "didn't give anything back." That successful people who attribute their success to hard work and being smart are wrong, apparently because there are less successful people who are also smart and hard working. Apparently they were successful only because the government built roads and bridges for them - roads and bridges that were paid for through taxes by guess who...those same wealthy and successful people that Obama claims "didn't give anything back."
Obama then goes on to say that the Internet was invented by government so that "companies could make money off the Internet" which shows you just how stupid and unfit for this job Obama is.
The Internet was "invented by government" back in the 1960s and 70s to ensure government communications in case of a nuclear war and never intended for commercial use. It was entrepreneurs who saw the potential and transformed it into what it was now.
You act and think that they WANT to be there...
Americans are different than Europeans, and I will bet you that they will vote no to Obama at least i large part because they know there situation will only get worse if he is voted in.
That is the American way, and more people are pissed than you seem to realize
Well, there is one way it won't be "the" epitaph. The double-down pResident is fully capable of saying or doing something even more outrageous to take its place.
I have posted in numerous threads that R&R need to hang the “you didn’t build that” albatross around Obama’s neck.
I have recently listened to several of Ryan’s rally speeches and he is doing just that.
I have also posted that “you didn’t build that” will turn out to be Obama’s “read my lips” disaster. It will be his downfall and it will be what he is remembered for.
Pollak is an idiot. Obama just handed work permits and voting rights to 2 million illegal aliens without an act of Congress - a naked, unconstitutional action, yet his so-called “new mantle of leadership”, Romney and Ryan said NOTHING about it. Neither did Boner or McConnell or Preibus. SILENCE, as America dies.
Ugh. Puke. Vomit. Upchuck. Regurgitate. - The few times I’ve lurked on Democratic Underground, I’ve had to go take a shower most of the time after I’ve lurked there. Every other word is the F-bomb.
That, or maybe Chick Fil-A.
I drove up from Orlando to The Villages today to listen to Ryan. The crowd went NUTS when he did "you DID build that" line...particularly because he said it in reference to his OWN MOTHER who built a small business after his father died..."Mom, you DID build that"...
That line was the beginning of The End for The One.
And the ‘Dey gon put y’all back in chains’ remark has also helped.
Thanks, Joe!!!
Joe Biden, the gift that just keeps on giving....
