Egypt's Islamist president has given himself the right to legislate and control over the drafting of a new constitution. He has installed at the top of the powerful military a defense minister likely to be beholden to him.
Under Mohammed Morsi's authority, officials have moved to silence influential critics in the media. And though a civilian, he declared himself in charge of military operations against militants in the Sinai peninsula.
Over the weekend, Morsi ordered the retirement of the defense minister and chief of staff and reclaimed key powers the military seized from him days before he took office on June 30. With that, Egypt's first freely elected president amassed in his own hands powers that rival those of his ousted authoritarian predecessor, Hosni Mubarak.
If left unchecked, there are fears Morsi and his fundamentalist group, the Muslim Brotherhood, could turn the clock back on the country's tumultuous shift to democratic rule and pursue their goal of someday turning the most populous Arab nation into an Islamic state.
The Brotherhood already won both parliamentary and presidential elections after the uprising last year that forced Mubarak out. The question now is whether there is any institution in the country that can check the power of Morsi and the Brotherhood and stop them from taking over the nation's institutions and consolidating their grip.

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Meet the new boss, just like the old boss...
Only worse by a factor of ten.
They’ve given him enough rope. Now it’s him or them.
Good luck Egyptians.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
As Egypt sinks ever deeper into the insane excesses of Islamic Fundamentalism, the time will come when Egypt’s population - and the world at large - will deeply regret kicking out the relatively moderate Mubarak.
Let us not forget that this was a change applauded by the Obama Idiots, the fatuous clods whose Middle Eastern policies are leading us moment by moment into a very dangerous war with Iran - a war which Israel’s surgical strikes of several years ago might have avoided had such strikes been encouraged by a rational, intelligent, and insightful administration.
As if that's really a question. Not likely, and that's the whole point. Fooling themselves right up until the end. Neville Chamberlain comes to mind.
No, he’s not the same as the old boss, if you mean Mubarak as he was from 1979 to 2011. If you mean Nasser the National Socialist, then that would be more like it.
I’m sure you’re right. My emphasis was more on the generic idea that Mubarak was too authoritarian, and so they needed “change”. [ Where have we heard that before? ]
So what they have is a new strong man, that could very easily make Mubarak look like an old softy by comparison.
Nasser was an Arab Nationalist, which meant he hated the Islamists, it was him that executed the Muslim Brotherhood’s Sayyid Qutb.
Mursi is an Islamist puppet, and roll back what little protections Christians had while Islamizing the government.
Nasser was a National Socialist; both nationalist and socialist means . . . the blanks are filled in already. Fits Göring’s description of the ideology to a T. Where do you think Nasser got “pan-Arabism” from? Hitler’s Pan-Germanism. Only real difference between Nasser and the MB was over secularism.
Most Arabs are not receptive to capitalism in general, so socialist policies are more or less the norm.
If the choice is between the ossified Nasserist military, and the Islamists, then the Nasserists are the safer bet.
Since Morsi just dismissed Tantawi, I’d say it’s too late for a coup.
Sounds like it. It’s so foreign to me to have new leadership come in and totally rewrite their Constitution.
I had hoped the military would keep this pecker-head in check. So much for that.
Oh well; that’s exactly what Mubarak himself said would happen. Of course, since he’s Mubarak, the libs branded him wrong on everything . . . until he was proven right on everything, that is.
Well, I think we were both pretty sure this Arab Spring was going to turn into one bleeper bleeping long cold winter.
More massive murders across the region. Who could have seen this coming?
The ones chanting “To Al Quds we go, martyrs in the millions” do not. The libs over here are starting to.
It was more than applauded by the Obama Idiots, it was engineered by Obama and Hillary to topple Mubarak and set up the takeover by the Islamists.
Good point.
Obama has the Muslim Brotherhood’s solemn promise that the pograms against Christians and the war on Israel won’t really get going until after our elections...
