Pipe manufacturer TMK IPSCO will move its corporate headquarters from Illinois to Houston to increase its exposure to the oil and natural gas market, the company has announced.
Currently based in Downers Grove, Ill., TMK IPSCO said it will move most of its headquarters offices to the company’s new research and development center on Houston’s northwest side. The company expects to complete the Houston move by the summer of 2013 and build a new headquarters in the city within the next two years.
“Houston is the hub of the global oil and gas industry. It’s important for the company to be positioned there in order to facilitate relationships with key customers, attract and retain energy-industry talent and demonstrate our commitment to the industry,” said TMK IPSCO Chairman Piotr Galitzine, in a written statement. “Most importantly, this transition will enable us to be a better, more efficient and more service oriented company.”
The company is the U.S. arm of Russia’s largest steel pipe maker, TMK, which counts Exxon Mobil, Shell and other major oil producers among its customers. It manufacturers drill pipe, well casing and other products for the oil and gas industry.
TMK IPSCO has 11 facilities in the United States. In addition to its research and development office on Houston Oaks Drive, the company has three manufacturing plants in Texas.

I know that governor Hair has been working on this sort of thing for awhile now and has been fairly successful. I know Cat is thinking about expanding more into Texas from Peoria,( they moved some manufacturing down here awhile back), but the big cherry, the kahuna, the big mambo would be the CME. I know it’s impossible, but just think about the CME making noises that they aren’t happy with the mob tax in Ill. Ill is terrible for business and Chicago is the worst, but just imagine CME telling they plan to relocate in Dallas or Houston. It would save them tens of millions if not hundreds of millions in taxes. You know they have got to think about things like that when the numbers get that big. Besides taking a bullet on your lunch break with no carry law. I wonder if Santelli would come with them if they decided to move?
Every state is conservative outside the city (at least most). The problem is if you get rid of the cities in America. You have hardly anybody left. lol.
Last week was in Destin on vacation. I was amazed how many shops have closed up with for sale signs. Notice broken windows boarded up on some. Three years ago it was thriving.
Oddly, the hotels in “Prime” locations were full and had higher room rates than 3 years ago.
Houston economy is robust. We have all kinds of new residents from out of state. Its really reminds me of the early 80’s.

I was remarking on that a few weeks back. The ‘For Lease’ and ‘For Sale’ signs are everywhere. The empty storefronts are ubiquitous.
The very wealthy are still enjoying their vacations and taking in the salt air, but they don’t buy trivial trinkets and such like their lower and middle class counterparts. They are more careful with their wealth and will not waste it on junk........
Alaska is beautiful, but it can be a tough place to grow old. Flip down ice picks on the canes not withstanding...

I don’t take the 2008 election to be indicative of rural Illinois at all. Many were enamored with the idea of voting for the first Black president.

Of the four largest cities in the U.S., Houston is the only one with an openly Gay mayor and like all the others is very much a sanctuary city. I’ve been here since 1985 and what I have seen is a shift right on money issues but a strong shift left on some social/moral issues.
I would suspect there is going to be a battle royal next year when they gather in Austin over how much money to pump into the public school system. Lots of parents are complaining about the vast array of school supplies they must now pay for out of their pocket.
State of Texas employees are not going to have their insurance coverage through Blue Cross of Texas any more as of September 1 and are moving to United Healthcare so this is a big change. UHC operates their systems primarily out of California so this will have a marked effect on both Blue Cross and the employees.
Should prove to be an interesting Legislative session.
Seriously, I have pictures of when I was camping in East Jordan, the second week of June. We woke in the morning to over an inch of snow covering the ground and the tent. In my book, snow equal winter.
Yes, I was exaggerating. Most years, snowfall is done by the middle of May.
