A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.
It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.
The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.
The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilitiesforces that are facing cuts under the Obama administrations plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.

Red Route 1?
We had a SOSUS net that ran from the North Cape of Norway to Bear Island in the Arctic.
As soon as the Soviets left their bases on the Kola Peninsula, we could hear them.
dis-information
Payback for the US sub operating in Polyarny a few years ago?
This was Obama giving the Russians more space and flexiblity before the election. Imagine what he’ll give them after the election.
During the run up of China thanks to our wonderful streaming of cash so it could realize it’s desires, I tried to sound the warning of what it’s threat in the Pacific could eventually wind up being.
Oh that was a hoot to some military folks here.
Why China couldn’t get within a thousand miles of the U. S. without our military knowing...
Now we find that Russia has done that very thing.
One sub off the Eastern seaboard, one in the Gulf, and one on the West Coast, and we could see a number of targets go up with little more than five to ten minutes.
Who’s laughing now?
Course why would anyone need to take us out, since we’re doing such a bang up job of it by ourselves.
I suppose many think that China and Russia have no desire to "take" the USA, and occupy real estate.
However, what if either power were to take offense to our overseas action(s) and "asked" us to cease and desist.
Roasting a couple of US cities may become a method to achieve that goal, to get USA out of their hair somewhere else.
A limited strike is certainly an active possibility.
I’ll say it again.
Eisenhower, Marshall, and Truman should have listened to Patton in 1945.
Agree completely ....
Unfortunately despite my desperate desire to do so I can’t comment on the main body of the story or the comments.
I will say the assertion towards the end of the article that Venezuela is going to buy 11 submarines including an Akula is absolutele nonsense.
They haven’t bought the three Russian Ladas that they’ve been supposedly “negotiating” for since 2005, and they couldn’t possibly afford 11 submarines or be able to man or maintain them, much less an Akula.
Take everything from Bill Gertz with a grain of salt.
And we would all be dead before we could even get a good debate going on whether those were sub missile launches or jet contrails.
The Gulf of Mexico is a big place - lot of room to hid.
We have violated Soviet waters with subs, so it goes both ways.
I agree, disinformation.
We probably were able to track the sub quite easily, but publicly we say we can’t so the Ruskies and others think we don’t have the technology.
Yeah, but OUR Navy has diversity now!
Did Communism Fake Its Own Death in 1991?
American Thinker ^ | January 16, 2010 | Jason McNew
In a [] 1984 book [New Lies for Old], ex-KGB Major Anatoliy Golitsyn predicted the liberalization of the Soviet Bloc and claimed that it would be a strategic deception. ..."
"Golitsyn's argument was that beginning in about 1960, the Soviet Union embarked on a strategy of massive long-range strategic deception which would span several decades and result in the destruction of Western capitalism and the erection of a communist world government."
"Golitsyn published his second book, The Perestroika Deception, after the Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991. This book contained further analysis of the liberalization, in addition to previously classified memoranda submitted by Golitsyn to the CIA. The two books must be read together to get a complete picture of Golitsyn's thesis."
