Rep. Paul Ryan, announced Saturday as Mitt Romneys running mate, is a lawyers son from Wisconsin who has become a genial, relentless force in Capitol Hill politics uniting a fractured and squabbling GOP behind his plan to remake the federal budget.
He is Catholic and has cited that faith snip major influences on his political views

Sadly and Embarrassingly, MORE CATHOLICS VOTED FOR OBAMA.....PATHETIC.
GREAT VOTING RECORD!!!! Can’t wait to vote FOR RYAN!!
GREAT VOTING RECORD!!!! Can’t wait to vote FOR RYAN!!
I actually give Mitt a LOT of CREDIT for picking someone like Ryan who is a DEVOUT CATHOLIC and VOTES THAT WAY!!! I like Mitt a LOT more today.
it means everything to a converted Catholic.
many American Catholics are 2nd and 3rd generation - "cradle Catholics.". They are also cradle Democrats, of the old school, who vote that way because that's the way they always have. They are also (often) cradle union members or supporters - already very well organized. That's why when Uncle Teddy says, "this is the one", it was certain to be a reality.
People also fail to realize that Catholics were brutally oppressed in the US a century and a half ago, and learned to pull together as a matter of survival. Foe better or worse, that's the way it was.
I would add that the Catholic church is probably the largest and most effective charitable organization on the planet. The influence of the Church in education and healthcare is simply incalculable. Catholics put their feet to the street to help the needy and "disadvantaged". (it is therefore NOT a slam-dunk that Catholics would recognize the dangers of socialized medicine, because an age old debate is the obligation of a society to care for its needy. Nonetheless, some do see those dangers). It's impossible to do that in this world and remain completely free of government entanglement -- esp when the nature of government is to encroach, usurp, and dictate. The Charitable works of the Church have been indispensable and are surely among the greatest unsung heroics in Americas social history.
Now, however, as the reach of government is extending more than ever, the game changing. It takes time for people to recognize that. Some will not want to be free of the states alleged support. Some will accept it. It could get very ugly, even heartbreaking - and I certainly expect it to simply because that seems to be the way the narrow road always leads.
The gates of hades will not prevail against the Church, but also, the Church will be sifted. As for Ametica, well, that's up to us.
I was thinking more of abortion.
But THAT goes beyond being Catholic. People of all and no creeds have had abortions. Not all have had their wakeup call about it, and don't have the conviction to condemn it without necessarily condemning themselves.
I know a husband and wife, married forever, Catholic: she refused to vote for obama, he voted for obama. I'll never forget the look of heartbreak and disbelief on her face when she told me that.
The Great Divider. But don't think God hasn't appointed him to do just that.
Practicing Catholics, OTOH, voted for McCain by a slim majority.
So how do you figure "Catholics elected Obama"? At worst, they "elected Obama" to the same degree the rest of the country did.
Non-practicing “cultural” Catholics elected Obama, not believing ones.
An authenthic Catholic really does not have a choice between Biden and Ryan. “You can’t be both Catholic and pro-abortion.” I really can’t figure out where the idea came up that a real Catholic could support any form of abortion. Taking a human life is telling God He doesn’t know what He is doing creating another human life. Human life is God’s creation not any human’s creation.
“the Catholic church is probably the largest and most effective charitable organization on the planet.”
I happened to catch last week on TV the convention of the Knights of Columbus with a speech by their head, reviewing their past years accomplishments. WOW. Very impressive. He just went on and on for two hours, describing one program after another. And it was tied in with a patriotic theme. I would presume they are a more conservative group among the Catholics?
I would say the Knights of Columbus are just as conservative as 90 percent of their congregations. We hear about the 10 percent that are liberal CINOS, but rarely hear about the REAL Catholics like the K of C.
He looks Italian. I wonder what his mom’s maiden name was.
What do they call the person high up in the Knights of Columbus?
High up within a state.
FWIW, I didn’t find his mother’s maiden name, but his mother is said by wikipedia to be of mainly German, along with some English, descent. This info followed the obvious piece that his father is Irish.
“We hear about the 10 percent that are liberal CINOS’
10% of total Catholics? Seems small. Seems like all I know are liberal.
I agree; in fact that was my point.
