We fired our cannon ‘til the barrel melted down
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round
We filled his head with cannon balls, and powdered his behind
And when we touched the powder off the gator lost his mind
We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
Without question the best weapon song has to be “Delilah” by Tom Jones and maybe “Mack the Knife” by Bobby Darin but I am going to say this time that the Kossoy Sister’s version of Maybell Carter’s “On the Banks of the Ohio” packs the greatest punch. I was shocked the first time I heard it, thinking, “Did I really just hear that?” Spooky. Amazing country harmony on their recording.
Banks Of The Ohio (Lyrics from the Johnny Cash version)
Songwriters: Maybelle Carter
I asked my love to take a walk
Take a walk just a little ways
And as we walked, along we talk
All would be our wedding day
And only say that you’ll be mine
In no others arms entwined
Down beside where the waters flow
Down by the banks of the Ohio
I asked her if she’d marry me
And my wife forever be
She only turned her head away
And had no other words to say
And only say that you’ll be mine
In no others arms entwined
Down beside where the waters flow
Down by the banks of the Ohio
I plunged a knife into her breast
And told her she was going to rest
She cried “Oh Willy, don’t murder me
I’m not prepared for eternity”
I took her by her golden curls
And drug her down to the river side
And there I threw her into drown
And I watched her as she floated down
And only say that you’ll be mine
In no others arms entwined
Down beside where the waters flow
Down by the banks of the Ohio
And going home between twelve and one
I cried “Oh Lord, what have I’ve done?”
I’ve killed the only girl I love
Because she would not marry me
And only say that you’ll be mine
In no others arms entwined
Down beside where the waters flow
Down by the banks of the Ohio

When I was just a baby my mama told me, "Son
Always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns"
But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die
When I hear the whistle blowin' I hang my head and cry
That counts as a song...
