In the wake of the recent mass shooting in Colorado, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called on police to join him in fighting for more gun control: "I don't understand why the police officers across this country don't stand up collectively and say we're going to go on strike." It is illegal for police to go on strike, and Mr. Bloomberg later backed off his statement. But the mayor is just as far off the mark in his assumption that police agree with him on gun control.
Take the annual survey by the National Association of Chiefs of Police of more than 20,000 chiefs of police and sheriffs. In 2010 it found that 95% believed "any law-abiding citizen [should] be able to purchase a firearm for sport or self-defense." Seventy-seven percent believed that concealed-handgun permits issued in one state should be honored by other states "in the way that drivers' licenses are recognized through the country"and that making citizens' permits portable would "facilitate the violent crime-fighting potential of the professional law enforcement community."
National surveys of street officers are rare, but they show . . . .

Bloomberg is PROFILING legal, lawful gun owners.
I wonder if he ever considered profiling criminals ???
Interesting survey stats. Usually the Chiefs of Police are the most anti-gun. Rank and file officer usually support Second Amendment rights for law abiding citizens.
He knows zip, zero, nothing, nada on just about anything. I bet he has help going to the bathroom. He knows he has to go but he just doesn’t know how to go about doing it. Bet he has to call a press conference to announce it.
Mr. Lott is quoting a survey from the National Association of Chiefs of Police, which from this survey appears to be well reasoned regarding the Second Amendment.
Let Blooming-idiot-berg’s personal security detail disarms first.
You know, to show his sincerity.
I’m sure he will make that announcement at any moment.

No?
Excellent article.
I am a retired LEO, having served for nearly 30 years. I can tell you that most of the cops I have met take positions consistent with this article.
I have been a civilian for 10 years and I can tell you that I will never give up my guns, period.
“I have been a civilian for 10 years”
Just one of my hot buttons. You were a civilian when you were a LEO unless you were in the Military. This is the Military’s opinion as well as my own.
Just commenting not trying to PO you. I applaud your position.
I don’t know how anyone can take that idiot Bloomberg seriously. He’s got a severe “I’m God” complex. He claimed to be the ultimate authority on food, an authority on health, an expert on guns and crime, and recently an expert on nursing babies. I guess his recent approach is that if you can’t abort the babies, then lock up their food and starve them to death, except for the elites and upper level collective members.
Funny, I almost typed citizen, but I was one of those while I was a cop. LOL
I won’t debate your point because it doesn’t matter to me. Today I am retired, that is all I really care about.
That would be wrong. Besides, you can't antagonize your constituents like that and get reelected.
Just FINDING the damn thing probably takes two guys, a magnifying glass and a gay porn flick.
Reminds me of the flap over Reagan talking about Indians becoming citizens. He didn't mean anything bad by it, it was obvious, he was just searching for a word to describe your average person that didn't belong to any special sub-group, but you should have seen the heads exploding on the left.
;>)
“didn’t mean anything bad by it”
My point is the us vs them attitude of many cops in our town who like to play soldier too many with SWAT attitude, our hospital police even have a SWAT unit. It is part of the militarization of our police. I wonder where the term peace officer went.
Understood, and agreed.
Lott's being too kind.
