Dick Cheney has some advice for Mitt Romney on choosing a running mate: Don't pick another Sarah Palin.
In his first interview since receiving a heart transplant in March, Cheney told ABC News, that John McCain's decision to pick Palin as his running mate in 2008 was "a mistake" - one that it is important from Romney not to repeat.
It's subject on which Cheney has some unique experience. He helped Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush lead their vice presidential searches and, of course, served as vice president for eight years. He's also privately offered some advice to both Romney and Beth Myers, who is leading Romney's search for a runningmate, on the process.
Cheney would not comment on what he told Romney and Myers, but he was harsh in his assessment of McCain's decision to pick Palin.
"That one," Cheney said, "I don't think was well handled."
"The test to get on that small list has to be, 'Is this person capable of being president of the United States?'"
Cheney believes Sarah Palin failed that test.
"I like Governor Palin. I've met her. I know her. She - attractive candidate. But based on her background, she'd only been governor for, what, two years. I don't think she passed that test
of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake."

It only seems hopeless... and yet there is hope. Consider the text below. After you read it... ask yourself this... “How can I not fight, when men like this fought for me... hundreds of years before I was born”?
You are not alone. If the government fails us then we will take our Founder’s guides and rebuild our Republic... we have to. We just have to find the strength to go on fighting against all odds. Our ancestors certainly did.

In the winter of 1776, General George Washington and his ragged army had experienced only defeat and despair. The War for Independence was going badly, with failure following failure. In the preceding months, Washington’s campaign in New York had not gone well; the Battle of Long Island ended in a loss when the British troops managed to out-maneuver the Continental Army. A series of defeats settled around Washington as he was forced to retreat across New Jersey to Pennsylvania on December 7th and 8th.
As the harsh Pennsylvania winter set in, the morale of the American troops was at an all time low. The soldiers were forced to deal with a lack of both food and warm clothing , while Washington watched his army shrink due to desertions and expiring enlistments. Now, more than ever, a victory was desperately needed.
The original plan called for the three divisions to cross the river under the cover of darkness. The boats to be used for the crossing were gathered earlier in the month in compliance with General Washington’s orders, primarily as a defensive measure. Various types of boats were collected; most notable were the large, heavy Durham boats used to carry pig iron down the Delaware.
Fully expecting to be supported by two divisions south of Trenton, Washington assembled his own troops near McConkey’s Ferry in preparation for the crossing. By 6 PM. 2,400 troops had begun crossing the ice-choked river. The operation was slow and difficult due to the condition of the river. There was an abrupt change in the weather forcing the men to fight their way through sleet and a blinding snowstorm. These obstacles proved to be too much for the supporting divisions led by Generals Cadwalader and Ewing, ultimately preventing their crossing at southern points along the Delaware.
Against all odds, Washington and his men successfully completed the crossing and marched into Trenton on the morning of December 26, achieving a resounding victory over the Hessians.
By moving ahead with his bold and daring plan, General George Washington re-ignited the cause of freedom and gave new life to the American Revolution.
Extreme? Just about every point made on this thread critizing Cheney references the contradictions in his statements against the polling history of the 2008 campaign.
Face it, you came in here to start a fight, not to discuss the topic of the thread.
Not surprising. Cheney has been going soft since his daughter went gay. Also why would he offer this at this time? See that is really the thing. Its not as if this is valuable advice or even relevant. Team McCain threw Palin to the wolves. If anything Palin proved by not only surviving but surviving as an unquestionabl powerful political force that she most certainly is capable of taking over.
You have to realize that this kind of talk from guys like Cheney and also House and Senate GOP leaders is meant to telegraph a message. The message seem to be that after Mitt wins we are in control not Palin not you slubs in the grass roots. I hope I am wrong on this and maybe this is just Cheney being Cheney but guys like this are too smart not to say this crap in a calculated way.
Funny how Cheney is unable to list even one single presidential task that Palin could not accomplish.
Id say picking John McCain was the huge mistake.
“We just dont like giving left-wing loons any hits.”
That is one of the reasons as to why this is the World’s premiere CONSERVATIVE site! No compromise on Conservatism... No Quarter for progressives. Thank you.

Uh, no. I was hoping for a topical, adult discussion. But then you showed up.
At the top of the list is the fact that she stood up to corruption. Corrupt officials went to jail when Palin turned them in after she refused to become part of the corruption.
She’s not only qualified, she’s more qualified than anyone else by virtue of her opposition to the permanent political class.
And there is nothing in the job of president that Palin couldn’t accomplish.
None have ever been named because none exist.

Later, pinhead. You’re apparently too stupid to realize how big a fool you are making yourself out to be.
Who is this bozo? Is he for real, or is it an act?
I agree with the school that says Cheney has arguably done more for the conservative cause in this nation than any person in a generation, including those who merely pontificate from behind a keyboard.
He has been IN the game...in the private sector, in the public sector, and has taken the slings and arrows of the socialists in the media and now, apparently, he is targeted by the self-appointed purists of the chattering chumps in cyberspace conservatism.
Somehow, I think he’ll survive and thrive despite the bedwetters in that arena, too, don’t you? :)
Cheney is too compromised as far as I am concerned to be critical of Palin and her standings. He has problems as to protecting Halliburton actions and protecting his daughter’s sexual orientation and expressions among other things. At one time he might have been what the USA needed but his drifting toward the ‘new world order’ doesn’t match Palin’s sincere belief in the USA Constitution.
on the fritz mondull... it isn’t hard to remember when you lived through idiots like that.
