Dick Cheney has some advice for Mitt Romney on choosing a running mate: Don't pick another Sarah Palin.
In his first interview since receiving a heart transplant in March, Cheney told ABC News, that John McCain's decision to pick Palin as his running mate in 2008 was "a mistake" - one that it is important from Romney not to repeat.
It's subject on which Cheney has some unique experience. He helped Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush lead their vice presidential searches and, of course, served as vice president for eight years. He's also privately offered some advice to both Romney and Beth Myers, who is leading Romney's search for a runningmate, on the process.
Cheney would not comment on what he told Romney and Myers, but he was harsh in his assessment of McCain's decision to pick Palin.
"That one," Cheney said, "I don't think was well handled."
"The test to get on that small list has to be, 'Is this person capable of being president of the United States?'"
Cheney believes Sarah Palin failed that test.
"I like Governor Palin. I've met her. I know her. She - attractive candidate. But based on her background, she'd only been governor for, what, two years. I don't think she passed that test
of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake."

I know that I had to hold my nose to vote for McPain and it would have been even more distasteful if not for Sarah Palin as his running mate. McCain is just one more reason for my becoming a TEA party independent. RINO’s are just a degree worse than democRAT politicians. Where are our statesmen????
Statesmen? We don’t have any.
I’ve got news for VP Cheney. When I pulled the lever for a Republican in 2008, I was voting for Sarah, not McCain. I couldn’t stand McCain; but, I would vote for Sarah. Hubby felt the same way.
Show us on this doll where Palin touched you.
And yet Dick just endorsed for President someone who had been the governor of a liberal state for only four years?! The choice of Dick Cheney has been the biggest vice-presidential picking error in recent decades. Just imagine a one-war Bush presidency without Cheney's neo-con interventionism and his socially liberal, homosexual marriage endorsing influence. I once greatly respected the man, but without him there likely never would have been a President Obama.
I have been prepared to vote for all republicans down ballot this year... mitt will never see my vote. I may just vote against ALL incumbents. I cannot take any more of these unsolicited and unnecessary attacks on the right by the gop elite.
cheney has FINALLY shown his true inner thoughts... and they resemble all that I despise in progressive thought. The gop/e just keep pushing and pushing and pushing and pushing... and denigrating Conservatives and Conservatism and alienating us from any party involvement... and since I am a Christian and an honorable man... my only avenue of response at this time is my vote.
Why support these people any longer??? All they say and do is as opposed to the founding intent of this Republic as anything pelosi, reid or obama have said. roberts legislating from the bench... boehner pledging to NOT defund obamacare and to FULLY FUND the 1.28 TRILLION DOLLAR IN DEFICIT SPENDING budget this year... scalia going wobbly on guns and now dick trashes Palin for NO GOOD REASON. He could have made his point more clearly without attacking Palin... unless the "announcement" that Palin talked about is her being chosen to run with mitt... and then this attack becomes a clear case of destroying Sarah to protect jeb bush and bill clinton IV.
**** all of the gop... down to the friggin' janitor that cleans their urinals.

“It was worse than a crime, it was a blunder”
I think that DC’s stupid remark perfectly illustrates one of the greatest problems with the stupid party - these guys can’t understand that the left is engaging in a monolithic, 24/7 struggle. Whether or not you agree with him regarding Gov. Palin (I certainly don’t), it is a fact that this comment will harm the conservative cause. DC has been around long enough that he should know this. Time and time again, these assclowns demonstrate their obliviousness to long-term strategy. Copts massacred in Egypt? People out of work in Ohio? Religious freedom trampled in Massachusetts? No problem - dinner at the Club was excellent!
While I adamantly disagree with Cheney on this, it is not what he said that troubles me, but WHY he said it.
Cheney doesn’t say much of anything without a purpose. Cheney is trying to accomplish something, what is it?
I’m not besmirching here character at all . . . I intend to show, during cross-examination, that your psychiatrists planted the idea of child abuse in your head.
Failing to use her natural ability and talent was the real McCain coming to the surface.
Accepting his offer was likely Palin's biggest career mistake.
Had she finished her term as an immensely popular and successful Gov, then come onto the national stage, a little older, a little wiser and with a longer resume, she very likely would be the nominee rolling over obama with a sunami of growing support.
Instead, the GOPe removed her from future contention early by offering her a deal she couldn't refuse before she was ready.
Once she accepted the VP job and got things stirred up nicely, they balked at defending her during the campaign and afterward and tainted her cred by associating her with loser McShame, the mandatory endorsements for his reelection were the finishing touches for extinguishing her rising star.
And now we have Mitt. yippee
The GOPe fights hard and smart against their enemies, sometimes keeping them closer than friends.
Probably to give cover to Romney to pick a really bland veep candidate.
You’ve got that right. If I’ve learned anything over the past four years, it’s that the GOP-e is totally alligned with their buddies in the whole elite liberal political-media complex to marginalize and DESTROY any budding voices for genuine conservatism, both fiscal and social. And Palin, by her sheer effectiveness in tapping into cultural/ideological conservatism of non-elite ‘flyover country’ has been targeted for obliteration like no other.

He wants Romney to pick one of the chosen ones and not a true conservative. Romney is no spring chicken, this veep could move up.
Such a person should resign and have a strong republican conservative appointed by the Republican President, in his place, for national safety.
coincidentally, that sitting VP could run in the upcoming election for President.
It'll be a while before I have anything nice to say about you again GOP-E dick.
