Dick Cheney has some advice for Mitt Romney on choosing a running mate: Don't pick another Sarah Palin.
In his first interview since receiving a heart transplant in March, Cheney told ABC News, that John McCain's decision to pick Palin as his running mate in 2008 was "a mistake" - one that it is important from Romney not to repeat.
It's subject on which Cheney has some unique experience. He helped Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush lead their vice presidential searches and, of course, served as vice president for eight years. He's also privately offered some advice to both Romney and Beth Myers, who is leading Romney's search for a runningmate, on the process.
Cheney would not comment on what he told Romney and Myers, but he was harsh in his assessment of McCain's decision to pick Palin.
"That one," Cheney said, "I don't think was well handled."
"The test to get on that small list has to be, 'Is this person capable of being president of the United States?'"
Cheney believes Sarah Palin failed that test.
"I like Governor Palin. I've met her. I know her. She - attractive candidate. But based on her background, she'd only been governor for, what, two years. I don't think she passed that test
of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake."

By that test, neither Barack Obama NOR Joe Biden belong on the DNC ticket this year.
I’m really intrigued that GLBT-ABC-Disney is looking out for the GOP interests in 2012.

One of the best analyzes I’ve read in a long time. Goes right to the heart of the issue. Which is exactly why people can’t stand these TV talking heads, DNC/RNC any more. It not about a party! It’s Liberty vs Tyranny!
The problem isn’t just McCain, it is the process by which we let the media and states like Iowa and New Hampshire determine WHO will be in the field of GOP candidates. Since Ohio and Florida are swing states, let them have more say in the early days of the election. Texas never gets an opportunity to vote for conservatives by the time the presidential primary gets around.
If it hadn’t been McCain in 2008, we probably would have had Romney, or Huckabee. No win situation there.
I’m with ya, Jemian. See my tagline.
The GOP-E has told me to open wide and take my cod liver oil for the last time. (I could have used another analogy but it isn’t very ladylike).
That said, we are in the minority.
Most Pubbies that I know are going to bend over(there we go) and hold their nose at the same time. And they are adamantly insisting that I do same.
Obama may lose as a result of this mass exodus of all things first principled...
But after taking center stage to bow for a week over the “resounding GOP victory”, we will then be stuck with an arrogant, preening RNC for years.
They will feel entitled to be able to usher in any Tom, Dick and Lindsay Graham, ie they will become the self appointed shepherd of Rino after Rino after Rino onto the electoral stage...
We the People are the only ones who can stop this by defunding the GOP and refusing to support their reachers across the aisle..
But as you can see by the tepid but increasingly steady pro Mittens comments here and elsewhere, it probably won’t happen.
and by the by, my lawn boy would receive more enthusiastic shout outs than are being posted here on FR for Willard.
Column after column,,commentator after commentator: Where are the accolades for Mittens being a man of principle, core beliefs, champion of American exceptionalism, Reagan-esque values, Ryan-esque intelligence? ........ Uninterrupted loon chorus off from my lake.
Plaid shirts definitely do not work for you.
And try some wire rims.
The obvious problem here is that Cheney’s years of experience in Washington disqualify him from having any ability to judge a person’s qualifications for the White House.
Notice Cheney gives no specifics. There are no presidential duties he can name that Palin couldn’t uphold.
Cheney is dropping context. She had good accomplishments in those two years that most governors never have.
mitt left office early too... just check it out for yourself.

#142: "It is sad that you consider the topic . . . ." [emphasis added]
Do you find yourself feeling sad often? What else makes you sad? There are people on this thread who truly want to help you
Look Dick... I like you and you were a good VP... but you are wrong on sodomy and homosexuals marrying and you are wrong about Sarah. Now STFU and invite roberts bird hunting.
LOL, LLS. love your posts.
Cheney gave in to his principles because of having a gay daughter. His other daughter, Liz, is going to be the only Cheney to carry our torch.
Yep... “All in the Family” isn’t just a TV show featuring Archie Bunker.

He should have stayed on the radio and allowed a good conservative without his baggage to run instead.
Pretty funny coming from a guy who has posted solely to bash Palin supporters instead of discussing Cheney's comments, pro or con.
That’s too funny.
Why does Cheney fail to name specific presidential duties that are beyond Palin’s abilities?
Because there are no specific functions of the Oval Office that Palin couldn’t perform. This is exemplified by her documented accomplishments as Governor.
I have been using that and Rasmussen for years now with my friends who argue Palin was why we lost. The polls unanimously show it was the McCain suspended campaign blunder that lost the election.
McCain was down an average of 8.9% in the polls before he picked Palin, then spent the rest of the campaign tied or slightly ahead or slightly behind (always margin of error either way).
Then he pulled the gimmicky “I am going to suspend my campaign and go to Washington to help save the economy!” stunt, and never recovered. He and his retarded campaign staff believed it would be seen as yet “another example of Senator McCain putting his country before his own interests.” Instead, it was seen by everyone as the gimmick it was. It was a last-second gamble that cost him everything; and the Steve Schmidts and Nichole Wallaces of the campaign immediately began leaking negative stuff about Sarah Palin in an effort to blame and destroy her so that they could set-up as heir the guy they had supported all along until he dropped out: Mitt Romney.
Don't even get me started on the McCain staff (most of which were Romney staff previously). These are the brilliant minds who were floating the idea of Joe Lieberman and Tom Ridge as the best V.P. choices for John. Then they handcuff Palin, come up with this ridiculous suspended campaign idea (which played right into the DNC/Obama talking points that McCain was “erratic”), leak bad rumors just before the election, and sell their garbage to HBO so that we can have a Palin-bashing movie showing on cable during election 2012 season.
Now these same guys have the brilliant ideas of picking Pawlenty, McConnell, Jeb Bush, and Ayotte as V.P. choices. Oh yeah, that’ll really shore up the Tea Party and Conservative base, guys! We're all just dying to have Jindal, Rubio, and the rest passed up for one of those squishes! These guys have so little sense of the Conservative grassroots and are so inexcusably retarded when it comes to their vulnerabilities that it is sickening.
Romney could use a Palin himself, frankly. But I suppose we'll watch Team Romney “safe play” himself into an Obama re-election. Steve Schmidt and Nichole Wallace are the Shrummies of the GOP - the fact they they still have jobs or influence is absurd on its face.
