Dick Cheney has some advice for Mitt Romney on choosing a running mate: Don't pick another Sarah Palin.
In his first interview since receiving a heart transplant in March, Cheney told ABC News, that John McCain's decision to pick Palin as his running mate in 2008 was "a mistake" - one that it is important from Romney not to repeat.
It's subject on which Cheney has some unique experience. He helped Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush lead their vice presidential searches and, of course, served as vice president for eight years. He's also privately offered some advice to both Romney and Beth Myers, who is leading Romney's search for a runningmate, on the process.
Cheney would not comment on what he told Romney and Myers, but he was harsh in his assessment of McCain's decision to pick Palin.
"That one," Cheney said, "I don't think was well handled."
"The test to get on that small list has to be, 'Is this person capable of being president of the United States?'"
Cheney believes Sarah Palin failed that test.
"I like Governor Palin. I've met her. I know her. She - attractive candidate. But based on her background, she'd only been governor for, what, two years. I don't think she passed that test
of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake."

Impress us with some more of that blinking html code. That was wicked cool.
Your tears nourish me.
Regardless of whether it was a mistake or not, i wish Palin hadn’t been picked by McCain. Can you imagine how strong she would have been this go around without the media hounding her and trying to sabotage her every day for the past 4 years? Plus the left wouldn’t have been able to attack her for not having enough experience and she would have had more time to prepare for the “gotcha” type questions from the conservative-hating media.
I still like Cheney, but McCain blundered during the financial crisis and the media venomously attacked Palin while desperately shielding Obama from legitimate inquires, many of which would have sunk a non-media protected candidate. In the end, McCain stumbled badly on his own and the media heavily tilted the playing field to favor Obama. That’s the story from four years ago. Picking Palin was the boldest move that McCain made and would have been universally cheered as a brilliant pick if the out-of-control power hungry leftist media hadn’t been so determined to paint an incredibly unfair and unfavorable caricature of her.
Its almost like the Middle ARE democrats who don't like being labeled as such.
SCREW THEM
Sarah gave McCain a fighting chance to win the election and he squandered it. Just like a good RINO would, and just like Willard will do this time.
Wake Up People! We have had 2 Democrat Nominee for president this last 2 cycles, and judging from Dick's Comments here today it sounds like we have had Dem-lite nominees since 1988!
The GOP is dying a slow and very painful death, time will tell if a new Opposition Party can take its place in time.
Yep, World News with Diane Sawyer - now there's a group that wishes Republicans well...Cheney needs to pick his interviews - sometimes you're known by the company that cheers you on...

C’mon, you gotta admit that was good!
You sad? I thought you were sad. I thought that I made you sad. Sarah makes you sad.
Is his support of homosexual marriage above criticism too?
LLS
Sorry Dick but you’re all wrong. Too much time with the Bushes has corrupted you. Yes.
You are NOT alone.
LLS
You are correct. Even this site now bows to Romney.
Half the posts that rightfully criticize Romney the
liberal CHOSEN loser by the DNC are removed.
It is probably hopeless.
Conservative principles are gone in
America. American excellence in medicine is DEAD.
RomneyCARE will not be stopped but will be the standard
as is RomneyMARRIAGE that he imposed over the Mass.
Constitution.
I respect Cheney, and don’t find it shocking that he thinks picking Palin was a mistake. Makes sense given the political world he inhabits.
Like others here, though, I refuse to let anyone tell mein light of Obamathat Sarah would make an inferior President. She holds the beliefs of the Founders, and America has been rushing to their Judgement away from those sound men for a long time now. THAT is why they slander her.
And why we like her. Who cares if a mob of American apostates think the lady is electable?
Your post 145 was removed because you used a graphic from a hard-left site. Has nothing to do with defending Romney. We just don’t like giving left-wing loons any hits.
What can you say about a man who lost his heart...... Sarah Palin was the only damn reason I voted in 2008. I never liked McCain even while many played up his military service.
