Watching the start of the Olympics in London......Anyone else?
OK, I’ll take your word for it.
I still don’t think US announcers should use any honorifics for British royalty. Just my opinion. She is not our Queen. He is not a knight of our country. Calling her the Queen of England is sufficient. “Her Majesty” suggests that we are her subjects. Calling him Paul McCartney is just fine as well, we all know who he is.
They sure did!
I was thinking the same thing! Jerks!
They should light the cauldron with a shot from an Armalite.
Houston we have lift off.
I was surprised the idiot announcers didn’t know who he was. BTW, the Olympic flame look like someone’s golf clubs got set on fire.
It really isn’t much more than a courteous thing or just what they are known as.
We still refer to the guy that got hit on the head with an apple as “sir Issac Newton”, and the guy that trained our soldiers at Valley Forge as Baron von Steuben.
Even our founders, like John Adams meeting George III as ambassador to the UK, used such titles.
Time for some Laser Floyd!
The flame and the torch lighting were/are stunning.
I agree. That was very cool.
I’m sad that Paul sounds so bad....just damn
I agree but now it sounds like someones killing a cat live on stage. Not good.
I hope it’s just a cold, and not that he’s losing the voice.
Yes. Gag me with a spoon! Yuck! Including the UN freak.
Then what is the deal with *Muhammed* Ali? Come on - why is this guy such a big deal? What was the point anyway - he just kind of stood by 1 of the activist holders and no one even did anything regarding him.
Agreed. There is no need for that nonsense.
This Hey Jude singalong is taking away from the dignity of the event. Yes, he sounds awful. I don’t know how Hey Jude fits into the Olympics? Very odd.
IMO Baron von Steuben (who was not even a Baron) is different than “My Lord Baron”. Just like Queen Elizabeth is different than “Her Majesty”. Words matter and they signify deference to one’s “better” when you use such title.
I have no problem with Queen Elizabeth. I do have a serious problem with Her Majesty unless the person saying it is English.
But that is a pet peeve.
Ugh, McCartney sounds worse than the cover band.
Imagine you are on the waitlist for an operation, sick and in pain, and you watch the Olympics and see that all the doctors you can’t get to see wasted months learning how to dance for the Olympic Opening Ceremony.
I look at it this way...the one thing Britain has had going for it, even through their decline, was their music, so i would expect they would show the world the one thing they’re most famous for.
Couldn’t they have just went with this awesome version?
