The observations about the Nidal Hassan massacre were that the caliber he used caused the high injury rate with the relatively low death rate because the rounds went through his victims (without transfering all their energy to trauma) and into others behind them.

Yeah, true, temporary wound channels being what they are and all. But the 7.62 NATO, even if it zips right through, still has this immensely larger transonic shockwave behind it and the hydrostatic shock damage is much higher.

Actually I think the opposite was proven. The Muslim Jihadist murderer purchased and used SS192 (hollow point) and SS197SR (polymer sporting tip) ammo. Both types are specifically designed to minimize risk of over penetration and ricochet. Some of the first news reports were wrong (as usual) and assumed the murderer was using the 5.7 rounds designed to penetrate body armor (now banned) which turned out not to be the case. Over 200 rounds were fired and I think there were 54 casualties total.
