.
It’s a sad thing.I hope she comes back under another sign up name.I too used to worry about what I say or said from thread to thread.I could care less these days.
I believe so.
I'm an infrequent visitor to the Sunday morning thread these days as I no longer have internet at home so check in when I'm at the office like this p.m.
I too was curious as to why Altura was no longer here on FR so I went and looked at her past postings. First, she had been a Romney supporter since Sarah declined to run and made no bones about it here on FR, defending him frequently and with some enthusiasm, even admitting she voted for him in the Texas primary. Second she joined the TBL anti-Freepers and also made known her affiliation with that group here on FR.
Now I don't like Romney as our candidate, have been tearing up Romney mailings I get in the mail (lots of them!), but will vote for him rather than leaving my ballot blank or voting for our former Governor Gary Johnson. And my vote for him will be for ABO not for many of the reasons Altura gave in her admiration for him. But even if I was as enthusiastic for him as she is, I wouldn't flaunt it here on FR, even in response to those who egged her on. JimRob's opinions on Romney are well known and repeated here frequently, but he has been generous in allowing some contrary discussion. However, you are not going to get anywhere but a zot here on FR by challenging those continually, and by her admitting her membership on TBL (and it took some courage to admit it on FR), she was on the road to expulsion.
I was around in 2007 for the famous Giuliani "bug zapper" thread (18,400+ posts, http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1821435/posts) and gave myself an FR timeout after seeing so many leave, most from zotting, and more than a few from ousting after disagreement with one or more of FR's "purity" members. Now having just looked at TBL for the first time, reading some posts and seeing how vitriolic past members are over there toward FR, it is easy to see why FR would zot someone would go over there and then come back over here and tell how sweetness and light it is over there and how bad it is over here. She couldn't have it both ways and finally the totality of her disappointment/disagreement or whatever it was got her banned.
(If interested, you can see Altura's posts at the link: http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/by:altura/index?tab=comments;brevity=full;options=no-change)
It's us the protectors of freedom vs. the communists far left goons, statists and whatever.
IMHO, I want everyone I can get on my side regardless of whether they have slightly different takes on who can take out the dear leader which is what the game is all about. For me its all about the big picture not the details.
If she ever wants to come back, I would not suggest that. FR has had a number of returning trolls so it would be easy to track using the poster's ISP number. If you posted from the same computer or maybe just from the same location, that ISP can be tracked and someone with a new screen name but the same ISP number can be recognized. I suspect (but do not know for sure) that FR maintains a list of banned accounts with their ISP number so that they can prevent or quickly ban someone with that number from signing up again.
I am with you on this one.
ABO should be the rallying cry..albeit, some may post their anti ABO postions, no problems there.
I find it interesting that people can take such a “stand” for their views here and yet miss the whole bigger picture.
Its almost as if their hatred of Romney parallels that of Libs hatred of Bush or our hatred of BO...its one thing to present your position unadulterated on a website, quite another to vote for Obozo by NOT voting for Romney...because THAT is what it is when you toss your vote away. I do not have respect for that.
We all know that this is a game, we all know that we are not going to have a revolution this year. Yet while other things (like getting more conservatives into the Senate) must be done also...it is the height of childishness and narcissism to “pick up your marbles and go home.”
Well, I certainly don't disagree with anything you said. But posting favorable views on Romney on THIS website is not going to get anyone anything but grief. It's a decision that each of us has to decide individually, how far to push it with JimRob and the mods, and there are members of the 2007 "purity patrol" still around who make it a point of ferreting out those whose support for Romney is anything other than ABO.
But FR is not a secretive site where you don't know whether what you say will get you banned. JimRob makes it very clear what is allowed here and what will not be tolerated with respect to support of Romney. Those who cross that line and try to proselytize any undecided to Mitts favor are not going to be well received on here, period. Best to let that be and weigh in and discuss the multitude of other conservative topics here.
I don't believe any website is going to satisfy the totality of everyone's political beliefs and if a member believes he/she can not support or at least tolerate the forum's objectives and the positions of the owner, he/she is welcome to go elsewhere. Just my opinion for what it's worth...
Yeah I gotcha bud,all in all its sad to see her go.
What can I say. It is Jimrobs site. I suppose he can do whatever he wants with it.
Sigh. Yes indeed; I have seen a lot of good ones go in the past five years, first with Giuliani and now with Romney. And I agreed with many of Giuliani's positions, more so than with Romney as Rudy was not a flip-flopper. You may have disagreed with him, but you knew where he stood. But Romney is who we got and obviously its him or Obama or a blank spot/third party on the ballot, and the latter does nothing for the country.
I would hope that the majority of FR members see it the same way, let those who are so negative about him have their say and not engage them as you can not win with that issue here. No matter how supportive you are with his candidacy, and Altura was very supportive if not passionate, you can't come out on top with that here. Recognize it, withdraw from that fray and stay for the other conservative positions and the great people here on FR.
I don’t see anything in her history that looks bannable? What is TBL?
Thank you for explaining that.
This TBL....it stand for true blue something? It is the nemesis of Freerepublic?
I’d heard of it and read a little bit but I didn’t know such a thing existed.
Well said.
I pretty much agree. I’ve doubted that anyone got zotted just for voting for Romney, or indicating intention to. But you hear things.
Yeah, JimRob owns this site and some good common sense ought to have those who want to remain to temper their Romney remarks, it’s just good manners if nothing else.
I will end with my observation, for what it’s worth, that FreeRepublic, no matter how hamster-driven it sometimes runs, has the absolute best news discussion and commentary system of any web site on the Internet, bar none.
The “ping” function is great, Freepmail is unmatched most anywhere if I’m right with ageing mind.
I’ve not found a web site designed any better and that’s the truth.
sorry, but that was a weasly response.
I agree with all the positives you mentioned about the Freep website..In many ways, it is the best site in terms of structure, coverage, etc.
“temper remarks..good manners”...this site has some of the most obscene and at times viscious comments. Some are then removed, but plenty stays. And often that’s the heat of discussion.
So, discussion re Romney is limited, very limited...very interesting seeing how he is the only candidate, like him or not, that we have against obama, its a pure waste of time to attack someone IF they are having a discussion about Romney and saying what the negatives and Positives are. That IS the election we have this year, like it or not.
And who and HOW do you determine what is “tempered remarks”?
Good manners is one thing, civility is another important point. But to add that to say arguments about Romney means if its anything positive about him its “poor manners”, but anything negative ( which is perfectly legitimate too) is “good manners.”
There is no poster named Altura on TBL. I just checked via a link someone sent me. So she is not posting there. They list the sign up dates of posters--they haven't been around that long, and I checked alphabetically--no Altura. Now, that's not to say I didn't see a LOT of old and current FReeper names there, but that's between them and the powers-that-be here. Not me (there's no Alas Babylon! there, either!)!!!
MARK
Ah....lookit, I don’t determine tempered remarks. I do know, for example, that starting a thread with a title “Conservatives who refuse to vote for Romney will be responsible for the destruction of our country”, then fill it with an attack on those who refuse to vote for Romney, calling the names, stupid, pigs, rotton....well i’d call that an untempered comment.
Get a grip here please. It’s your right to consider my response weasly but I stand by it.
I concede good manners might be a bit much but I do NOT own this web site, neither do you. The owner of the web site does not like Romney.
You know the owner of a house doesn’t want you smoking inside, you still smoke?
What’s to be gained by constantly taunting the web site owner with remarks that you know will just make him mad? If you resent the stricture, the Internet’s a big place.
Do not even think of calling me crushed by fear of FR web site owner. Should I ever feel that I am restricted by site owner’s limitations I will be out of here. That has not happened to me yet but I don’t feel like I haven’t had the freedom to say my piece.
This site has vicious and obscene comments? Who knew!
I think people who insist on climbing on a rickety soap box on FreeRepublic and declare those who dislike Romney to be dolts, destroyers of the Republic, to be really stupid. Why do this on a forum where you know the site owner is rabidly anti-Romney?
Sorry, seems silly to me.
I know that Romney friendly comments are not all that welcome around here but we know that now, don’t we?
You may have the last word on this. I stand by my first weasly response.
