(CBS News) Sources say investigators have found key evidence in dumpsters and trash bins outside of James Holmes' apartment, including a shipping label from an internet ammunition store called BulkAmmo.com.
Investigators also tell CBS News they have recovered a surveillance video of James Holmes picking up approximately 150 pounds of ammunition at a Federal Express outlet in Colorado.
They've interviewed a UPS driver who says Holmes had 90 packages delivered to his workplace on the University of Colorado medical campus.
And sources say over the past several months, Holmes spent about $15,000 as he was putting together his deadly arsenal -- guns, chemicals, explosives, and ammunition.
"Through the Internet he purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition, more than 3,000 rounds of. 223 ammunition for the assault rifle, 3,000 rounds of .40 caliber ammunition for the two Glocks in his possession and 300 rounds for the 12 gauge shotgun."
Holmes did most his shopping on Internet sites. And he was clearly in a hurry.
A receipt from TacticalGear.com shows on July 2 -- two-and-a-half weeks before the shootings -- Holmes purchased a bulletproof vest and other equipment. He paid extra to have it shipped by 2nd-day air.

“Did no one at the University question him about the 90 UPS
packages marked as hazardous materials shipments???
All of which were not related to work !”
I purchase my ammo in bulk, 1,000s of rounds at a time; it’s alot cheaper. There is no “HazMat” marking, as ammo is not hazardous material. I can’t figure out where you get your info. Please provide me some reference. The only shipping restriction on ammo is “ground transportation only”.
I hear you.
Just saw that BHO2 ia going to meet with victim’s families.
All I’ve got to say is, that’s damn quick!
“Is it really that simple to buy the stuff and plan an assault such as this?”
Consider the Norwegian tragedy a few months back. Yes, it can be done. At least until Big Sis makes it illegal to buy anything without review.
Imagine investing $20K in bio equipment with evil intent, culture and fermentation and liophilization stuff. Lots of bio stuff on ebay.
Google(ups ammo)
I guess we need to ban the Internet or at least tax the he!! out of it’s users and regulate it through the UN.

Ammunition doesn’t really “explode” in fire...at least, not with the force and velocity it develops when shot from a gun. The gun’s chamber acts like a pressure chamber as the powder burns; the force-fit resistance of the bullet traveling down the barrel is the path of least resistance for the pressure.
When ammunition is triggered outside of a gun (like in a fire), the bullet will fly one way and the case the other way, usually before the propellant powder has all been burned. Think “POP” instead of “BANG”.
Just purchased 1,000 for $329.50 with free shipping.
And good evening to you!
Thank you. Damn Hollywood...
Hope you are doing well this evening.
5.56mm
THAT is a good deal on great M193! Good on you. That’s the best deal out there right now on brass/boxer 5.56mm.
“a lot of explaining to be done by someone”
This is still America, where we are innocent until proven guilty. You can buy a gas mask, body armor, and as much ammo as you can afford. Fertilizer, gasoline, drain cleaner.
Imagine what it would be like here if FedGov, with state and local assistance, watched all of your purchases to see if there were problem patterns.
WalMart will drop a dime on you if you buy certain batteries, Coleman fuel, and cold pills all at once. Imagine if there was a government bureau thinking up ways to prevent ANY threat, and they were in charge of watching everything you buy, waiting to order a rapid intervention if they thought you crossed a line.
DAC21 bought an extra 50 rounds of 22 longs, AND some polarized sunglasses, a rifle scope, some gloves and some pool chlorinator. That’s over our threshold, send SWAT-51 to intercept immediately! Children’s lives could be at stake!
“Did cbs do a story on where did Maj Hassan get his ammo?”
Good point! He used a fairly uncommon round in the USA.
“Which begs the question- who was bankrolling this guy?”
Ever hear of an outfit called “Visa” or that other outfit called “Mastercard”?
Usually the most injuries from exploding ammo is from case shrapnel. Unless its a large capacity case like a 50BMG.
Blackpowder is a different story though, as we know smokeless powders are propellants of different velocities from fast for small pistol and shotshells to lumbering stuff in big game cartridges.
It is still not hazmat, ORM-D = NOT hazmat. Small arms ammo (.50 cal, 8 gauge or smaller is the same as shipping a can of friggin’ hairspray.
Google (SgtBob knows about shipping, as delivery is his job)
Cheers!
I read yesterday during the “breaking” time frame that Jansing and her crew @ PMSNBC were already surmising on air that he used the same “Watergate” technique of taping over the auto-locking bolt. Yup, they actually referred to Watergate. Let no good crisis....
I would guess that it’s a fairly common marking for stuff sent to a laboratory.
The number of packages in the time frame is another thing entirely...
This all smells like last weeks fish fry.
“This is somebody who was selected for a mission, given equipment to carry it out,”
By wearing body armor, he negates some of the argument that an armed person in the theater could have stopped him. He anticipated someone shooting at him.
“Is it their big dicks that prevent them from killing people??”
Probably. If they have respect and admiration and plenty of attention (in the bedroom anyways), then they don’t need to try to obtain those through crazed shootings like this guy. And only half-joking.
And with regard to the ammo - it is not a large quantity for many folks that target practice, have a family of shooters, etc. BUT - for some guy that is planning on shooting up a theater - it is WAY overkill, and as I said - perhaps it somehow made him feel more powerful.
Or - perhaps he had hoped the diversion of his apartment blowing up would have given him more time to reload and get into more of the theaters. Although then why not have a bunch of spare mags in a backpack rather than going back out to the car?
Well - enough of trying to make sense out of a nutcase.
