There is a journalistic convention that appears to place great weight on SEC documents. But these are public filings by companies, which usually means there are not great secrets hidden in them. The Fact Checker, in an earlier life covering Wall Street, spent many hours looking for jewels in SEC filings.
As we wrote yesterday, we are standing with our assessment that Mitt Romney left the helm of Bain Capital in 1999, when he left to run the Salt Lake City Olympics. The date is important because some questionable investments by Bain took place between 1999 and 2002, when he ran for governor. But a Boston Globe article on Thursday raised new questions about that timeline, citing SEC filings, and the Obama campaign jumped to take advantage of it.
Despite the furor, we did not see much new in the Globe article. We had examined many SEC documents related to Romney and Bain in January, and concluded that much of the language saying Romney was sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president was boilerplate that did not reveal whether he was actually managing Bain at the time. (For instance, there is no standard definition of a chief executive, securities law experts say, and there is no requirement for anyone to have any responsibilities even if they have that title.)

The Progressives are grasping at straws. They’re desperate because they’re losing.
It's going to get more entertaining as Election Day gets closer.
It’s complicated enough and the WaPo analysis is long enough that the mind numbed mob will follow the lead of the MSM talking heads. I listened to Juan Williams last night spouting the daily bullet points. He needs another slap down.
Yes he does. Juan is a ZERO supporter. He gets the LIB talking points and spouts them daily.
One would think he saw the light when NPR let him go, without calling him in first.
Sununu made Juan look like a fool without trying hard and the fool eventually thought that Sununu was giving him a compliment. Several times the body language and facial expressions indicated that Juan was wayyyy out of his league when he did manage to figure out that his talking points were full of holes. he shot back in his chair with that “Oh S**t” look on his face so many times that it could have been coverage of a boxing match. Entertainment would be BOR getting his body language twit to analyze that one.
One would have to ask Juan why in the world does he continue to defend the people that ended his career at NPR that precipitated his writing a book about how much it hurt him?
When the outsourcing issue came up, John hit it into the next country when he described the biggest outsourcing of all for Obama with outsourcing our manned spaceflight program to the Ruskies. I only wish they had the side by side going when John landed that one.
The attacks on Romney have been fairly ‘low brow’. Instead of ads based on economic policy or moral issues, the O camp tells us about Romney’s treatment of his dog, how Bain was mean, and now this outrageous charge of a felony - with absolutely nothing to back it up.
The presidency has been reduced to a campaign for prom queen, in a Valley Girl high school.
Anyone notice Obama hasn’t said how he going to improve his Jobs record, growth in GDP, or cut the debt.
“Anyone notice Obama hasnt said how he going to improve his Jobs record, growth in GDP, or cut the debt.”
He says it every day. Get rid of the Bush tax cuts, implement Obamacare, use green energy while getting rid of fossil fuels and taking campaign donation from his 1% buddies on Wall Street.
I don’t think he could be any clearer.
For those of you keeping score: “The Boston Globe” is solidly in the tank for Obama, talking talking points directly from his campaign in 1 giant feedback loop (Vast Leftwing Conspiracy?)
OTOH, “The Washington Post” seems to be sniffing at this story like it was poisoned. Actual journalism?
“However, we have identified at least six filings that Romney did sign during this period: a April 13,, 1999 13D filing by Pirod Holdings regarding an investment in Rohn Industries; a Jan. 3, 2000 13D filing by VMM Merger Corp. regarding an investment in VDI MultiMedia; a Feb. 14, 2000 13G filing by Bain Capital Fund IV regarding Wesley Jessen Visioncare; a Feb. 13, 2001 13G filing by Bain Capital Fund VI regarding Integrated Circuit Systems; a Feb. 14, 2001 13G filing by Bain Capital Fund VI regarding ChipPAC; and a November 12, 1999 13G filing (first reported by Mother Jones) by Bain Capital Fund VI regarding Stericycle.”
Ever see this kind of scrutiny over anything by anyone for Obama?
This Romney campaign, maybe not as acerbic as we would like, seems to know what it is doing. There is still a lot of time and I would guess they have a pretty good time line of how and when they are going to attack.
The funniest thing to me is the fact that Obama’s campaign, just like his presidency, is spending too much money too fast before it has it, then has to go begging donors for more. They'll raise plenty, but I love seeing them spend it all this far out.
It might be something else.
There is a good chance that the Woodward and Bernstein expose came about because of Operation Mockingbird.
Daddy Bush put an end to paying journalists when he became Director of the CIA. But he said he would welcome unpaid cooperation of journalists.
The CIA has a long history with The Washington Post.
If someone at the CIA is going to take down Obama and let Romney win (because Obama crossed them)..they will do it with the help of the media.
That last filing listed concerns Stericycle, the company involved in the trafficking of aborted fetuses. The fact that Romney personally signed the Stericycle documents makes it a bit difficult for Romney to claim that he knew nothing about and had nothing to do with the transaction.
Of course, back then, he was openly supporting a "woman's right to choose." He may not have foreseen that he would now be running for president and forced to claim to be pro-life.
I've often wondered at the extent of CIA involvement in presidential politics. The "Plame Affair" looked like a CIA put-up job. Obama's mysterious background also looks like it could have benefitted from some serious assistance from Langley. His mother seemed like the kind of person CIA mIght have recruited, for instance. Then you have to wonder about Bill Clinton and his overseas misadventures.
Juan is on Fox for the same reason that Elisabeth Hasselbeck is on The View: to give the other side's viewpoint, but not in a way that will be effective to the audience. Juan is comedy relief to the Fox audience.
Cord Meyer supposedly said he recruited Clinton and was his handler. He told this to Jack Wheeler.
Look into how Jack Wheeler died.
Sounds like someone wanted him dead.
that might be the wrong Jack Wheeler. Not sure which one was friends with Cord Meyer.
It might have been this guy
