**Exclusive**
Late Thursday evening, Mitt Romney's presidential campaign launched a new fundraising drive, 'Meet The VP' -- just as Romney himself has narrowed the field of candidates to a handful, sources reveal.
And a surprise name is now near the top of the list: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice!
The timing of the announcement is now set for 'coming weeks'.

It was Condi who received two standing ovations at Romney's Utah retreat a few weeks ago, and everyone left with her name on their lips.
Rice made an extended argument for American leadership in the world.

Rubio, while on the right side politically, is photogenic and articulate — but that’s not enough.
We elected a novice in 2008. Rubio needs a few years’ experience before he’s ready.
The Vice President does not mandate abortion policy. Does s/he?
Conservatives HAVE to get over the social “issues” that diminish their chances for election by shallow one-issue voters.
I am not gay, I oppose abortion, I’m a fiscal conservative - and I would support Condi Rice because she has foreign policy and SOS experience, is well-spoken, classy & smart - a far cry from what’s in the White House now.
Call me lame here on FR, and maybe I need some education about her, but I probably represent a large percentage of independent swing voters.
My Chocolate Lab could make the VP debate a hoot!
The bar is quite low!
I agree West is the best choice.
Absoulte Idiocy
The purpose of the VP pick is to get the P candidate elected.
She would not bring one vote!
“Support of baby killing = perfection.”
I’m no supporter of that, never have been.
But I’m also smart enough to know that Jesus Christ decided not to run this cycle, and we are stuck with mere mortals.
Besides, if “Conservatives” were serious, they have had NUMEROUS opportunities to end it in the last 30 years, and have chosen not to.
As a Democrat once said, IT’S THE ECONOMY, STUPID! Everything else is secondary, at this point.
Just my 2 cents here....
I don’t think Romney will pick a Conservative running mate as I don’t think Romney wants to be identified as a Conservative.
We will likely see this presumptive nominee run to the left after the convention. Having a Conservative running mate would hinder such a move.
Team Romney figures they already have the Conservative vote locked up, just by a process of elimination. The vote (s) they’re concerned about are the (Liberal) Independents.
She might bring in left-leaning women. Romney’s hurting with women. She won’t bring in blacks, hispanics, conservatives, men, seniors, asians, pacific islanders, native americans.
She might bring in piano players or college/university adminstrators, but I’m not sure of their massive numbers.
Wow she could still run for VP and vote for Obama like she did last time
We are sooo screwed.
5.56mm
I think Mitt is faking a Condi pick because she voted for Obama, is pro-abortion and gay marriage, then he will substitute his real pick and conservatives will be so grateful that they will accept a RINO.
I bet Mitt wants Rudy Giuliani, LOL.
... has Condi ever been linked romantically to any ... man?
.
That would make Gary Johnson look like a good vote.
That’s not unique to Romney, that’s a simple fact of Presidential election dynamics. Presidential elections have next to nothing to do with “getting the base out” (except in terms of fundraising) it’s about swinging independents.
Despite fantasies here to the contrary, McCain didn’t lose in 2008 because he wasn’t conservative enough. Of course given circumstances of the time regarding the economic collapse and Obama’s margin of victory, that was an unwinnable election regardless of who ran against Obama.
But Obama won by 7 points. That 7 points has to get whittled away, and it will be whittled away by mgetting people that voted for Obama to switch to Romney or stay home and not vote. There are not 7 points worth of “real conservatives” who didn’t vote in 2008 because McCain wasn’t conservative enough, that you can motivate to vote in 2012 by picking a candidate that caters to their Social Con checklist.
If that is Mitt’s plan, then it’s time to fire the campaign strategist again.
It would indeed be the perfect fake-out to then pick Christie, who's been vetted x10...
“not to be indelicate but....
... has Condi ever been linked romantically to any ... man?”
