**Exclusive**
Late Thursday evening, Mitt Romney's presidential campaign launched a new fundraising drive, 'Meet The VP' -- just as Romney himself has narrowed the field of candidates to a handful, sources reveal.
And a surprise name is now near the top of the list: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice!
The timing of the announcement is now set for 'coming weeks'.

It was Condi who received two standing ovations at Romney's Utah retreat a few weeks ago, and everyone left with her name on their lips.
Rice made an extended argument for American leadership in the world.

“...Top Romney source tells me “no Condi.” More: Romney wants someone more comfortable in ‘attack dog’ mode...”

not just Iraq. Although, Obama already won one electoin by being against the Iraq War, maybe Romney can help him get to 2.
9/11 and the PDB and all that
Being the natl security advisor when the country suffered its worst attack in history isn’t exactly a plus in my view. Let alone the documentary evidence that isn’t exactly flattering.
Basically she brings W’s entire term and foreign policy and defense policy back on the table and lets Obama rightly against Bush for a 2nd time.
It’s like Godfather III, “just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in”
robertcostaNRO: I hear a few UT retreat attendees (donors, etc.) are stirring Condi buzz. Per people I trust, it’s not Boston-driven.
This really is just a race between two liberal candidates, vying for liberal votes. Everything has been done to discourage conservatives and make them sit it out.
But on a personal level, I fell in love with Condi long time ago. And yes, Ive heard all the rumors.
I don't blame you! Condi's got class, she's got discipline and passion (you don't play piano like that without it), and she's got knowledge. There's a lot to admire.
But far away from the presidency, please ... pointy-headed intellectualism falls for all kinds of liberal crap.
I love your tag line ... my dad would add, "Or give it a squirt of weasel pee." (WD-40)
In any case, the only time a VP was of material import, for me anyway, was in 2008 because there was a decent chance ol' Nutso "Queeg" McCain would be taken away in a stright jacket before the end of his term and Palin would step in. So I voted for him.
I've been playing the straight-party ticket game for 36 years in every election, general and mid-term. If it's O v R, this will be the first time I'll have declined any Republican on any ballot, ever, let alone the Republican at the top of the ticket. But having looked at all the angles, voting for him is plumb insane, IMO.
If Romney gets in on a landslide, conservatives can just bend over and kiss their keesters goodbye as far as having any significant influence on American politics. With a "popular mandate!!!" in the hands of "progressive" Romney, a triumphant GOP-e, moderate (and craven) Republicans, and Democrats, conservative Republicans and Tea Partiers would be relegated to a neutered minority.
Our "conservative" option would be firmly toward growing into a "conservative" option just like England's "conservative" party. And it would likely have eight years to gestate. To say conservatives who voted for him would be kicking themselves by 2020 is, I believe, a gargantuan understatement.
I'm praying for a plurality, and I'm voting for a plurality. I'm voting third party.
Some near the top of my list:
Alan West, Newt Gingrich, Alan Keyes
Paul Ryan would be near the top of my list but I think he’s more valuable where he’s at right now.
SHE WAS A DISASTER AS SECY OF sTATE!!!
There are pros and cons to every VP candidate mentioned here on this thread. Where are all those a month or so ago who cried “ABO ABO”. If you are so disgusted then go over and Freep Drudge’s poll where you are losing almost 2 to 1.
Andy in Chapel Hill quietly just told you all a very important PLUS to Condi Rice. I can support her and feel it enhances the ticket. (and, No, I waasn’t at the book club meeting)

Condoleezza Rice!
Won’t happen thank God. She is an over hyped dope. Ineffectual. An awful Secretary of State....why do minorities and idiot women get this slot? Put a white boy Mormon in there to kick ass, Mitt should do this
RINO
no thanks
A black female? It will never happen. This is just hype to make him seem non-sexist and to downplay the institutional racism of the LDS church.
You nailed it. Romney could not care less about the opinion of any conservative voter. He is a socialist. He wants to round up as much of the socialist vote as he can gather. He can't win if they all want to vote for Obama. So he is trying to find ways to chip away at the democrat party's liberals, and make it easier for them to feel good about voting for a RINO.
As for the conservatives, the ones who know him well won't vote for him anyway. The ones who don't know anything about him except that he's a republican, will vote for him and get a huge surprise later, just like the ones who believe he is just pretending to be a liberal to get elected and the ones who think they can hold his feet to the fire. All of those people are in for a surprise. The ones who just want to win, just want to get Obama out, may or may not be happy. Their happiness will depend on how socialist they really are deep down because Mitt will eventually give us all the full socialist monty.
Like Paul Ryan, Bachmann's more valuable where she is now.
This is just a pathetic attempt by Drudge to get people talking about him. Nobody’s paid any attention to him for a couple of months. And I bet his hit rate is way down.
Wow she could still run for VP and vote for Obama like she did last time
OMG. I was just trying to get myself to choke down the idea of Romeny-Condi would completely turn me off and I would stay home. I don’t care what anyone else says or does.
Rice will not work. Don't like her that much myself. I would prefer Susana Martinez Gov. of New Mexico if he goes with a woman.
I would be absolutely thrilled with Rice.
She would add foreign policy bonafides to complement Romney’s business acumen.
Sorry. I don't consider any abortionist to be 'exceptional'. If you can't get life right, nothing else really matters.
Romney needs a half black, half mexican, half white, one eyed lesbian in a wheelchair to cover all bases!
