Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the former top commander of international forces in Afghanistan, said this week that the United States should bring back the draft if it ever goes to war again.
"I think we ought to have a draft. I think if a nation goes to war, it shouldn't be solely be represented by a professional force, because it gets to be unrepresentative of the population," McChrystal said at a late-night event June 29 at the 2012 Aspen Ideas Festival. "I think if a nation goes to war, every town, every city needs to be at risk. You make that decision and everybody has skin in the game."
He argued that the burdens of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan haven't been properly shared across the U.S. population, and emphasized that the U.S. military could train draftees so that there wouldn't be a loss of effectiveness in the war effort.
"I've enjoyed the benefits of a professional service, but I think we'd be better if we actually went to a draft these days," he said. "There would some loss of professionalism, but for the nation it would be a better course."

According to Warfare and Armed Conflicts- A Statistical Reference to Casualty and Other Figures, during World War Two 1.2 million African Americans served in the U.S. Armed Forces and 708 were killed in combat.
Mormon nen go on their two year mission for the church. I guess that accounts for the low participation rate.
That is a good book and in it he talks about how isolated the Legions are becoming. Most of them are coming out of families who served and from certain demographics. Any more if you didn’t have a dad or uncle in the service, you are not likely to join.
“Next time you are in line at Walmart, think about that McChrystal as you survey the young guys with the tatooed arms and legs, nose rings, Mohawk haircuts, eyebrow jewelry and tongue pins.
They might fit in pretty well with an army of Huns or Goths based on appearance, but when the chips are down, they Huns or Goths would kick their sorry butts out of the camp or cut their heads off.”
Note that what we call Huns are from a place now Muslim. Muslims have a use for WalMartians. Dancing Wal Martians could compete with Bacca Bazzi (sp).
And, Walmart could sell the antibiotics which would be needed afterwards.
It wasn’t a bad draft. It was a bad war.
If we had a draft looming, the colleges would be on fire, and we would not be so quick to send kids to the ME.
I am not in favor of returning to the draft, but if we need it—use it.
There is no shortage of Mormons in NV nor ID and there are plenty of Hispanics in SLC.
very low percentage of Mormons in the military due to their missionary service and high marriage rates. Married men are not your normal recruits.
I think that is why a lot of them died from “Friendly Fire”
I tend to agree with no universal service nor conscription except for the offspring of all Presidents, their Cabinets, all members of Congress and all senior DOD officers.
LLS
I’d agree, except the objective the military is to WIN! And the volunteer forces are amazing! Can you imagine a bunch of conscripts trying to carry their march load, while wearing body armor, in the heat, and at altitude?
No one said there was a shortage of Mormons in NV and ID, but I bet that there is a higher percentage of Mormons in UT than anywhere else.
Do not let Vietnam cloud everything. That's what the Left has done since the 60s. For them every armed conflict is a quagmire.
I say, fine, we can bring back the draft but we must have females registering for Selective Service as well, in the name of equality and all that.
They probably see the decline in young hetro men signing up for service and know that their pro-gay policies have chased away those who actually do the job the military needs done. So to allow them cover for their foolishness in pushing the gay agenda in our military they know they must bring back the draft or the military will consist of nothing but homosexuals who treat it like a big bath house of fun.
We need to have some generals with balls who tell the government that the military is not a social experiment where they can try such destructive things as gays openly serving or for that matter women in the front line.
The military is there for very simple reasons. To blow stuff up, to kill people and to win for our Republic.
It’s not a place to play or express your feelings and most certainly not a place to prance about and display your sexual perversions.
And when war comes, it's too late to call for volunteers or even draftees to be trained.
