Guns blamed for starting wildfires in parched West

(AP) — Campfires, fireworks and even lit cigarettes can spark wildfires. In the tinder-dry West, there is growing concern about the threat from guns.

This year, officials believe target shooting or other firearms use sparked at least 21 wildfires in Utah and nearly a dozen in Idaho. Shooting is also believed to have caused fires in Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico.

Those concerns come as states grapple with ways to cut the risk of new fires ahead of the Fourth of July holiday when many people fire their guns to celebrate the nation's independence.

Let’s see, cars and ATVs start wildfires with the heat of the exhaust system, which is why they are not allowed in a lot of dry grassy areas in CA for example. Smokers and errant cigarettes start fires.

There are a more smokers and drivers than people firing guns on any given day. Shazaam, careful, we can’t let common sense get in the way.

I could put out the fires with my urine before I could get a liberal to use logic and reason.

I had a series of email exchanges regarding liberal race baiting with an Dem uncle today. I quit. I can no longer deal with the mental illness of bigoted liberals (I know, bigoted liberal is redundant, it just bears repeating). I’m just going to remove him from my address book before I get nasty and my wife drops the hammer on me (he’s her uncle).

In the gun world, you're responsible for the bullet you send downrange.

So, "officials", name names.

Who were these gun nuts who caused fires with their weapons?

Waiting.....waiting.....

Guns and fireworks are both icky.
They're both just dripping with "American-ness".
Fire danger is as good an excuse as any to mandate a ban on those dated, American traditions.

Total AP Bullcrap.

Shooting at targets is extremely unlikely to cause fires.

This is a very old and worn-out saw of gun-grabbers. Back in the '60's a bunch of us (gun owners, ranchers, farmers in NM) decided to try to start a fire with rifles and handguns while shooting at targets. We used dry-as-a-bone fine prairie grass immediately behind the targets, placed on top of various kinds of rocks - purposely looking to create sparks.

After more than two hours of failing to start a grass fire, we finally turned to gasoline poured on top of the grass, and fired point-blank at the grass. Some 60 to 80 rounds later, we finally got a fire going.

Since many people nail their targets to trees, we also tried to set fire to chunks of pine trees that we brought to the trials. After firing hundreds of rounds at targets, we again had to resort to gasoline before we could get a fire going - and again had to fire at near point-blank to make it happen.

Not one of us denied that a spark could cause a fire under exactly the right conditions. But all of us agreed that exactly the right conditions are extremely rare, otherwise we would have seen far more fires in the Black Range than had occurred in our lifetimes.

In most Western states, the most common cause of fires has been lightening - a natural cause - not campfires, not guns, not human activity. Yes human activity has caused accidental fires, but not nearly in number compared to lightening. But, worse than that are forest fires deliberately set by human beings - that happening far more frequently in the recent 10-15 years.

For YEARS people have been shooting in the desert, in the summer, and just now suddenly there is a rash of fires started by it?

I call bullshit.

"firing at a mason jar filled with gasoline"

But, I'm guessing - they knew it would 'explode' - but it didn't - it just caused a fire. Am I right?

You’re presuming they thought about what would happen. I make no such assumption.

In southern Arizona, almost all of the wildfires are human-caused, even though we have a lot of lightning. Either some idiot threw a cigarette butt, or the illegals left a smoldering campfire at one of their overnight stops. I’ve never heard of a fire caused by shooting in the 15 years I’ve lived here.

This is the vaguest, most incendiary blarney, so obviously aimed at dismantling the Second Amendment. “Never let a crisis go to waste.” Like those old scare reports, ‘an SUV ran over three pedestrians’ that Rush used to make fun of./ yawn// rolling eyes.

***I have been target shooting for 50 years and have never seen any of my lead bullets cause a spark.***

In the military we were using tracers and started a few fires but NONE with regular copper jacket lead.
