Following individual meetings this week with school and district administrators, each family waived their right to a hearing and agreed to one-year suspensions from school and regular bus transportation. The Greece Central School District is legally required to provide all students ages 5 to 16 with an education, therefore, during the 2012-13 school year, the students who have been suspended will be transferred to the district Reengagement Center, located in a non-school facility. This alternative education program keeps middle school students on track academically while providing a structured opportunity for students to take responsibility for their actions by completing community service hours and receiving formal instruction related to conduct and behavior that prepares them for a productive future. The program includes a strong parent involvement component.
Each student will be required to complete 50 hours of community service with senior citizens and will complete a formal program in bullying prevention, respect and responsibility. In accordance with district policy, if at 30 weeks into the school year the students have completed the conditions of their discipline and are in good standing at the Reengagement Center, they can apply for early readmission to Athena Middle School.
Too much, too little, or just enough? A year’s a stiff sentence for 10 or so minutes of verbal harassment, as nasty as it was, but the school district’s under immense pressure to be strict with the little cretins. And this incident’s playing out, of course, amid growing awareness culturally of how bad the effects of bullying can be. Crack down on this bunch and you send a national message given the spotlight on this case.

Again, the woman needed to do her job, but she failed in that responsibility. And in this country for some reason, we love to reward failure and because this woman was a failure, she was given more than a half million dollars.
Where are you getting the rules of employment she received?
Simple observation of what is going on nationwide lends great weight to my argument that she was put there to be a figurehead and would have been the one to get into dutch had she even so much as “distracted the bus driver” by complaining to him.
Whether or not you wanted to vomit is irrelevant. This was an insulting and demeaning verbal assault by these kids. Kids at times engage in disgusting pack behavior, but insulting someone with words is just not one of the more severe forms of misbehavior.
Get as emotional as you care to, but a years suspension and reform school is far too severe for what these kids did. It is an overreaction to the youtube sensation and cowardly playing to the mob on the part of the school officials.

If what you say were true, every school bus and every 7th grade classroom and every home with 7th grade kids would be a chaotic as that bus, but that is not the case.
The only difference is that the bus had a bus monitor that was not ready for duty.
Would that be a wake up call to other parents about the conduct of their kids?
This likely wasn’t just a wild hair. I’d have crafted it differently perhaps, but the reform school is there for a purpose including keeping the brats under a microscope.

I grew up at a time in America where “pack behavior” was physically punished by tough-as-nails nuns and the no-nonsense, working-class parents of my childhood. The boys of my day wouldn’t even have understood the filth coming out of these brats’ mouths. And that was the 1960s!
You mistake passion for emotion.
The obvious answer is that this particular bullying was a local phenomenon, but so what? She was hired to be a figurehead: that is the overwhelming witness of how schools disempower their adults today, or else give them nothing but Weapons of Zero Tolerance meaning the kid gets bounced out for having a breath mint. (A foul mouth is usually overlooked, however.)

You obviously have never seen a bus in the last dozen years. It is the case to greater and lesser degrees. Do a search. This one got big press. Most don’t. Then if you are still in willful denial, go talk to teachers etc who quit because of the amimals they were not allowed to control.
But of course you’ll condemn them too and not the system that favors the animal. Pretty liberal thing to do I guess, but we are who we are.
Bus Monitor Job Description
Bus monitors are responsible for assisting children with getting on and off of the bus safely. They must also make sure that children are in their assigned seats, if applicable. Speaking skills come into play when communicating with children, the bus driver, parents or other staff. Bus monitors have to be able to convey information effectively. Bus monitors should also be able to communicate information that others understand which will be easier with oral expression skills. Bus monitors should also possess social perceptiveness, problem sensitivity, speech clarity and inductive reasoning skills. They need to be able to speak clearly, tell when something is wrong, be aware of others’ reactions and understand why they react the way that they do. Being able to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions is of utmost important when caring for children.
Knowledge
Bus monitors should have knowledge of the English language, public safety and security policies and procedures, psychology, and personal service. Assessing the needs of children and others around them is important for a bus monitor. Having knowledge of human behavior and performance is imperative in dealing with children and their parents, as well as other staff. Being able to safely and securely carry out safety procedures when it comes to children is the most important thing to consider as a bus monitor. They should have knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures and strategies.
Working Conditions
Bus monitors have hours and a work schedule that are determined on an annual basis. They may have to deal with loud and unruly children and harsh weather conditions when helping children on and off the bus. Bus monitors usually work part-time and sometimes on a seasonal basis, as they only work when school is in session. They usually are off on the holidays.
Salary
As of 2010, the U.S. national average annual salary of a school bus monitor is $26,699, according to CBSalary.com.

She could have had Incredible Hulk powers and would have gotten in deep dutch for using them.

I think you might be shocked what modern middle schoolers are like. God help them, and God help anyone who tries to discipline them.
Middle school buses are notorious hotbeds for drugs, sex & bullying.

None of us have her rule of employment.
But, we all know that we must be capable of doing our jobs, but this woman could not handle her job.
However, if you want to give a half million dollars to all people who miserably fail at their jobs, be my guest, but I doubt that will help the productivity of our nation.
