Texas fisherman prevails in epic battle with enormous alligator gar
GrindTV.com ^ | 06/21/12 | Pete Thomas

Whether Brent Crawford has captured the world's largest alligator gar will never be known -- his scale bottomed out emphatically at 300 pounds and he filleted the prehistoric-looking fish after attempting to obtain its weight.

But this much is clear: The gar Crawford landed while bow-fishing recently in Texas' Lake Corpus Christi is among the largest specimens ever captured -- and it was captured in a manner like no other gar captured beforehand.

We got alligator gars up in the bayous bigger than that. You can practically pet them from your boat, they come right up to you. They look mean and fierce but they are like logs in the water...........

Wow! Caught a couple of those when I was a kid here in Jenison MI. Just all bones, scales, and teeth. Ours were only about 10 pounds but they will cut you to pieces if you didnt use pliers to get your lure out of their mouths.

"Who the hell fillets an alligator gar???"

Yep. Much easier to take a skill saw and slice the steaks crossways...

Gar is a trash fish. I didn’t think anybody but po’ folk ever ate it. We never even considered doing so.

I was wondering the same thing. What does it taste like? I hope the guy likes it, because he now has a 5 year supply.

If his story is true, Brent Crawford does.

I may not be rich, but I’m not exactly “po’” and I love gar. When I lived up north, I enjoyed my carp, too, but gar is (much) better :-)

More likely Long nose Gar. We are in the northern part of their range. Alligator gar are not this far north.

good God, that’s a FISH? That has to be the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen. I am never going to go fishing in a place that has “fish” like that. Are we sure it’s not some kind of Stephen Spielberg robot for another Jurassic Park movie?

Lake Pontchartrain used to have alligator gar that big some years ago; my granddad had a fishing camp there at the northeast tip of New Orleans. Those monsters would come into the shallows to feed in the evening, I used to watch them from the pier. All the fishing camps in that area are gone now, but I'll bet the gar are still there.

One summer, someone caught a huge one and then dumped its carcass in the drainage canal that ran behind my parents house. They figured the regular rain would carry it further out, away from the houses. Unfortunately, we had a dry spell that allowed the huge fish to just sit there and stink up the entire subdivision. Nasty... but every boy with an air rifle did his best to shoot that thing to pieces.
