A GOP senator on the short list to be Mitt Romney's running mate is applauding President Obama's move to forgo deportations for some illegal immigrants.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said the more lenient policy is "welcome news" for those immigrants who will benefit, though he was quick to knock the administration for acting unilaterally.
Todays announcement will be welcome news for many of these kids desperate for an answer, but it is a short term answer to a long term problem," the Cuban-American Rubio said in a statement. "And by once again ignoring the Constitution and going around Congress, this short term policy will make it harder to find a balanced and responsible long term one.
Rubio's comments are a stark contrast to those coming from other Republicans, who are blasting the new rules as a threat to U.S. jobs and possibly illegal.
Rubio's remarks also further complicate the position of GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who took a hard conservative stance against illegal immigrants amid the heat of the GOP primary but is now searching for ways to soften that stance in order to appeal to Hispanic voters, who will be vital in a number of swing states.

Count me in that group. I gave his staffers a piece of my mind this morning.
Hey you sexy guy....I hope that “short list” just got shorter! Rubio is toast now.
Send Rubio a message by removing Hatch from office at the end of the month!
No more compromise with liberals!!!

MestaMachine to Dick Bachert
You are right, of course, BUT if, I repeat, IF the republicans are upset about this, it is ONLY because obama stole their playbook, (via Rubio,) to try and capture some of the latino vote. THAT little game is now dead in the water. The republicans will do nothing. If they do, or try to, it would be hypocritical in the extreme because they had intended to do exactly the same thing.
They were skunked.
Voice of practicality here, and flame if you want, because I’m leaving town:
This is going to happen.
GOP might as well agree like Rubio did and take some of the political credit from Obama. That’s why he’s doing this, politics. He doesn’t care about hispanics or any of us.
The bigger issue, which should be screamed by Republicans, is that Obama has no respect for separation of powers or the Constitution, that he’s a power-grabber. That might resonate.
And it’s legitimate. No telling what he’ll do between November and January 20 if he loses.
Well, isn’t that lovely. A sitting Senator cheering on the Dictator.
I guess the Senator is more concerned with “his people” rather than a illegal edict passed down on high from a usurping dictator.
Let’s just disband congress and SCOTUS altogether they are apparently not needed any longer.
Hey hot stuff...
Yeah, Rubio should officially be off the veep list now. Damn, I liked him before this, but I won’t support ANY candidate that’s soft on foreign invaders.
Agenda driven, regardless of laws...lack of respect for the constitution.
Since Rubio puts Cuban before American perhaps he would like to join Castro in his country of origin. He seems to have no problem with dictators.
Break immigration laws...get rewarded.
Jump ahead of those waiting and playing by the rules...get rewarded.
