Oh, and it gets even better. Someone did a touch more digging, and ferreted out that this also would apply to mail - that, in fact, the plan would basically legally require the police to open all letters that pass through the mail system in the UK.

Big deal. We already have it.

(Except, perhaps, the opening of snail mail)

And where, pray tell, is the UK going to get the money for that sort of surveillance?

Oh, and I suspect someone is selling the data.

I posted an oblique reference to Viagra on a Hottie thread some weeks back and ever since then my email has been stuffed with enlargement spam.

George Orwell was absolutely prophetic. Within 10 years they will be monitoring people in their own homes.

Selling data to spammers, just like we do?

“...those worried about the surveillance program of being either criminals or conspiracy theorists.”

And those advocating it are paranoid control freaks, tyrants, totalitarians, perverse voyeurs and deviants, and advocates of fascism. It is not only that their ideas need to be utterly rebuked as loathsome to freedom and liberty, but that they, as individuals, need incarceration to protect the public from such twisted machinations and sociopathy.

monitoring the information in real time.

Home Office Secretary Theresa May said in an editorial published ahead of the bill’s unveiling that only evil-doers should be frightened.

“Our proposals are sensible and limited,” she wrote in The Sun, the country’s top-selling daily. “They will give the police and some other agencies access to data about online communications to tackle crime, exactly as they do now with mobile phone calls and texts. Unless you are a criminal, then you’ve nothing to worry about from this new law.”

It’s interesting to me how my feeling change over the years and as our governments become more oppressive.

“Only evil-doers should be frightened”, Really?! So what happens when they change or expand the definition of an evil-doer?

I love technology and how it makes our lives easier than what our parents and grand-parents had to deal with. But in retrospect my parents and Grand-parents were far more free than I am today. So many new Laws and regulations with the force of law are enacted EVERYDAY.

As Ayn Rand foresaw, we are all criminals today, and that’s how we will be controlled by the regime. Free men cannot be controlled in the same ways criminals can be.

Perhaps the luddites and neo-luddites are correct in their reasoning. Too much technology makes us serfs or slaves to those who would use that same technology to control all aspects of our lives.

Hmmm. Sounds like it could show a net profit if it is organized properly! Maybe they should sell the rights to Google?

If you want to glimpse the future, all you have to do is watch the movie “V for Vendetta”. Unless we are very careful this country will slide down that slippery slope and any semblance of our great nation will be nothing more than a memory. All references to it will be erased form the databanks.

Trash like you are more of a threat than are criminals.

I suggest they do a trial run -- all government employees should be under surveillance by the public. I want to know how much the clerk spends on booze. I want to know where the PM's income is really coming from. I want to know all of it. Who is in debt? Who sneaks away to a seedy hotel in the middle of the day? The public should know every little thing about anyone who works for the government.

If, after 5 years, this still seems like a good idea, then maybe the government should be allowed to watch the public.

Look into who financed and gave google propreitary info as a startup....don't think for a minute it all came from the private sector. Many large co's are helped by the gov't for their own use down the road.
