Thirty years ago on June 11, 1982, audiences were first introduced to "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" in all of its non-CGI, 2-D glory. And when the flick returned to theaters in 2002, viewers who were hoping to relive their childhoods had their memories tarnished when the FBI guys chasing Elliott and co. were seen with walkie-talkie instead of guns.
But thankfully in time to celebrate the 30th anniversary, Steven Spielberg realized his mistake and the guns of your youth are back in place for the Blu-ray release scheduled for October, reports Vulture.

Saw it in the theater in 1982.
Thought it stunk then.
Still think it stinks.
Most overrated movie, ever.
“Most overrated movie, ever”
I agree with you to a point. In my book. “Avatar” is the biggest stinkeroo of all time with “The Hunger Games” coming in a very close second.
I skipped seeing it in 1982 because it sounded like a stinker. For the 30th Anniversary, I’m going to celebrate by skipping it again!
I’m with you.
I liked ‘The close encounter of the 3rd kind’, compared to E.T. And I watched reruns of it, but never E.T.
Total fiction ~ no attempt at realistic representation of locale ~ phony phony phony.
Avatar lost it when...... well, when it used a trick out of Gulliver's Travels ~ the floating landmasses. I expect something more up to date than that, or, if used, to have some plausible explanation.
These films are all flawed, some moreso than others.
I saw it when I was 3, in fact it’s the first movie I actually have a memory of seeing in the theater. Maybe I was just the right age for the film, because I thought it was decent.
Years later, we watched a dubbed version in German class, and I have to say, it was hilarious then. In German, the relatively simple phrase “ET phone home” becomes “Eh Teh Telephonieren Nach Hause”, which pretty much sent the entire classroom into fits of laughter.
The only funnier thing from German class was when the teacher brought in some German Peanuts cartoons, and in one panel, Snoopy declares that he can do something “hundschenschtil”, which we quickly deduced was the German phrase for “doggystyle”. Everyone in class remembered that vocabulary word!
I’d say Avatar lost it when it became apparent you were watching “Pocahantas In Space”.
Just a few years after ET was released, Reagan signed Amnesty for Illegal Aliens.
If not for ET, there would not have been Amnesty for Illegal Aliens.
That was enough to convince me I didn't. To this day, I still haven't, so I guess they were wrong :-)
Atari lost it's ass on their video game of ET.
There were other factors, but they ended up dumping 5million of them in the desert.
She did not quite do cartwheels nekkid down the main street though ~ close.
I got that game for Christmas in 1982. I was able to beat it on the easiest level, but lost interest before I could beat the hardest levels.
Now Raiders of the Lost Ark had the best Atari tie-in game ever.
You were right, close encounter is not my top 25 favorite.
I only used it because of the same e.t. theme which came out at the same time as an example, and which was not a ‘blockbuster’.
Never saw avatar, so I wouldn’t know what your meant.
I hated E.T. Stupid movie.
Not I. Never listened to Stern.
***compared to E.T. And I watched reruns of it, but never E.T.***
I like the sequel to E.T. E.T. RETURNS or WAR OF THE WORLDS. Went home, got his BIG BROTHERS and returned.
