Hours after saying the private sector is "doing fine," President Obama on Friday walked back those remarks, saying it's "absolutely clear" the economy is not fine.
"That's precisely why I asked Congress to start taking some steps to make a difference," Obama said.
Obama corrected himself at a press availability in the Oval Office just hours after after he made the original remark to reporters in the White House briefing room.
Republicans, recognizing a political gift, had pounced on Obama's initial remarks, which came a week after a dismal jobs report found the economy added only 69,000 jobs in May.
They compared Obama's comment to Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) election-changing comments when he said, "the fundamentals of our economy are strong."
Obama's opponent, Mitt Romney, immediately slammed Obama, accusing him of being "out of touch."
"I think he's really defining what it means to be out of touch with reality," Romney said. Speaker John Boehner echoed that sentiment on Capitol Hill, saying, "Take it from me, the private sector is not doing well."
Obama had to walk it back, his media didn’t back him up this time.
I have no doubt Ed “Seig Heil’ Schultz and Madcow Maddow will back him up.
Its video history now. Should be part of every campaign commercial.
Won’t matter because this won’t stick to him. Nothing sticks to him,,,not Solyndra, not Fast and Furious, not revealing secrets to make himself look like the ultimate warrior,,,nothing. This will be forgotten by Monday.
He is behaving exactly the way a malignant sociopath behaves as their house of cards (read blatant lies) wobble before crashing down.
